Can I buy one item from a Chinese factory?

A factory minimum does not always prevent a personal purchase. Ask whether it covers new production, a packed carton or goods already in stock. A single finished unit, an existing specification or an agreed trial quantity may be possible, but availability and the delivered price need checking. Cambridge China Bridge checks these options through its own staff in China.

Find out what the minimum actually covers

Tell the supplier you want the item for yourself, your home or your family. Ask whether the minimum applies to making the product, selling existing stock or keeping cartons intact. A catalogue photograph does not confirm that a finished item is available.

Our small-order guide explains the wider sourcing options. For a personal purchase, the immediate question is whether the supplier can release the exact item you want without making you buy unwanted goods.

Check a finished stock unit first

Ask for current photographs of the actual item, its model, dimensions, material, colour and condition. Confirm whether it is unused sale stock, a display item or a sample. Check included fittings and instructions, and whether it is suitable for your intended use at home.

Cambridge China Bridge's staff in China can ask the factory about a single stock unit and check wholesale stock if the factory cannot supply it. Keep the search to genuine branded, supplier-own-brand or unbranded goods. For a Chinese wholesale listing, see our buying service; the listing's minimum and stock still need confirmation.

Ask whether the carton can be split

If stock exists but the seller only quotes full cartons, ask whether it will open a carton and sell the item separately. Confirm the extra packing charge, protection for transport and whether loose fittings will remain with the item. The seller may decline.

Do not accept a mixed pack just to obtain your preferred colour or size. Ask for the exact contents before deciding. Our minimum-pack guide explains how pack restrictions differ from production minimums.

If it must be made, keep the specification simple

Ask whether the factory can supply its existing model, material and colour without custom printing or packaging. If it offers a sample or an agreed trial quantity, confirm exactly what you would receive. Be honest that this is a personal purchase; do not promise a future bulk order to obtain an exception.

A prototype may differ from the finished product and may not be ready for everyday use. Ask about construction, finish and function before accepting it. The minimums and sampling guide explains those differences. If the factory will only make a production run, consider another stock supplier or a UK retailer.

Approve the actual arrangement and delivered cost

Send Cambridge China Bridge the product link or photographs, your required specification, delivery postcode, intended use and acceptable alternatives. Through our small-orders service, the team checks what the supplier will actually accept and quotes that arrangement. Confirm the item, quantity, condition, checks, packing, delivery arrangements and any setup charge before paying.

Ask the quote to identify transport, VAT, any duty payable and any delivery-company charges, including what remains payable later. For purchases sent from abroad, VAT is paid when buying the goods or to the delivery company before receipt. Agree how damage, faults, returns and replacement parts would be handled, and compare the total with buying locally.

Frequently asked questions

Can I buy one item even if the factory has a minimum?

Possibly. Check whether the minimum covers production, cartons or stock sales. A finished stock unit may be available separately, but the supplier must confirm the exact item and price.

Can the factory sell me a sample for home use?

Ask whether it is a finished saleable item or a prototype. Confirm its condition, fittings and suitability for everyday use. Calling it a sample does not establish that it is suitable.

Do I have to buy a whole carton?

Ask whether the seller will split it and quote protective packing. If it refuses, look for a stock seller offering individual items rather than buying goods you do not need.

Is buying a single item from China cheaper?

Compare the complete delivered cost with a local purchase. Packing, transport and other charges can outweigh the lower item price. Include the practical cost of returning it if something goes wrong.
