Packing upholstered furniture for container shipping

Approve packing for each furniture model: protect upholstery from rubbing, trial cushion compression and recovery, remove or shield protruding feet, and support stacked loads through proven packaging rather than padded surfaces. Ask Cambridge China Bridge to coordinate packing approval with its staff in China.

Approve the packed model before bulk production

Ask the factory for a packing drawing showing the furniture orientation, contact layers, supports, cushion position, feet and restraint points. Identify where weight passes through the pack and which surfaces must remain free of pressure. Approve the actual production materials, not a photograph of a similar sofa.

Keep this approval separate from sofa pre-shipment inspection. Record unpacked dimensions, appearance and cushion feel as the reference for checking transport damage. The nearby outdoor furniture guide covers assembled versus knock-down supply; this brief deals with protecting upholstered furniture after that choice.

Separate abrasion protection from load protection

Specify a clean, soft contact layer compatible with the fabric or leather, then an outer protective pack. Keep staples, rough carton edges, straps and adhesive tape away from upholstery. Trial the complete wrapping on the actual finish and check for rubbing, colour transfer, surface marks and flattened pile after removal.

Add protection at arms, corners and seams without tightening it into the padding. Restrain the furniture through supported packaging or approved frame locations. Do not treat a soft cover as protection against crushing, or use loose cushions to fill gaps between furniture and heavy cargo.

Prove cushion recovery before approving compression

Do not approve vacuum packing just because it reduces volume. Ask the factory to confirm whether the actual filling and sewn cover are suitable for compression. Agree the compression method, packed storage duration, recovery conditions and acceptance criteria for each cushion construction.

Run a trial using production cushions and the proposed packaging, allowing for transport and warehouse storage. After opening, compare dimensions, shape, seam position, wrinkles and support with the uncompressed reference. Record the recovery period agreed with the manufacturer. If the trial leaves persistent flattening or distortion, change the pack or ship uncompressed. Use route-specific packaging tests to scope the wider transport trial.

Remove or shield protruding feet

Where the design allows removal, pack feet and fixings in a labelled, secured compartment away from upholstery. Protect threads and finished surfaces, and provide assembly instructions. Open a packed production sample and refit the feet to check completeness, alignment and stability.

For fixed feet, use a supported base or protective enclosure that keeps projections from piercing neighbouring packs. Ask the factory to demonstrate how the packed unit is lifted and set down. Reject arrangements that load vulnerable feet sideways or allow a foot to press into another unit's arm, back or cushion.

Approve stacking and verify it during loading

Show permitted orientations, stacking limits and support positions on the loading plan and pack markings. Establish them through a loaded-pack trial, including the proposed packed storage duration. Transfer upper loads through tested cartons, supports or racks without pressing on seats, arms or backs. If that cannot be demonstrated, specify no stacking. Do not approve inversion or side loading simply because it fits.

HSE guidance says loads should be secured or arranged to prevent sliding. Ask the packer to show restraint and gap-filling arrangements that prevent movement without squeezing upholstery. Keep heavy mixed cargo from bearing on furniture. Use the container loading check for shipment records, and add photographs of supports and contact points before they become hidden. At receipt, record damage before unpacking, then repeat the agreed cushion recovery check. For signs of pests on arrival, see our guide to insects in furniture or crates.

Frequently asked questions

Can sofa cushions be vacuum packed for shipping?

Only approve it after a trial with the actual filling, cover and packing method. Agree packed storage duration, recovery conditions and acceptance criteria. Ship uncompressed if persistent distortion remains.

Should sofa feet be removed before container shipping?

Remove them where the design allows, secure the labelled feet and fixings away from upholstery, and check reassembly. Protect fixed feet with a supported base or enclosure that prevents piercing and sideways loading.

Can upholstered sofas be stacked in a container?

Approve stacking only after a loaded-pack trial proves the arrangement. Supports should carry upper loads without pressing on padded surfaces. Specify no stacking where the arrangement has not been demonstrated.

Is wrapping enough to protect upholstery in transit?

A compatible soft layer helps prevent rubbing, but the pack also needs support and restraint. Trial the actual wrapping for marks and colour transfer, and keep straps, tape and rough edges away from upholstery.
