Method and limitations

We fetch the English weekly XML reports for the last 24 calendar months, including the current partial month. Dates are report publication dates, not measure dates. Cases are deduplicated by case number: the latest report wins, with addenda taking priority on the same date. Revised cases are assigned to that latest report month. Explicit withdrawals in report addenda are excluded, including cases no longer present in the report body. Explicit Professional or Non-consumer types are excluded; missing or other type values are retained. Origin uses countryOfOrigin, never notifyingCountry. China, PRC and People’s Republic of China are normalised to China; Hong Kong stays separate; missing and unknown origins remain unknown. Denominators include all origins. Hazards use the existing deterministic keyword classifier on the danger text only, masking the verb phrases “lead to”, “leads to” and “leading to” so they are not counted as lead metal. Other means no mapped hazard was identified; source risk types remain in the CSV. Multiple hazards and risk types can apply to a case, so their totals may exceed alert counts. Legal and standard names are extracted only where named. Category wording is retained from Safety Gate, with a separate mapping to UK guide categories for factory checks. No judgement is made about a brand or seller. Source alerts can be revised or withdrawn; this extract is not a live safety clearance.

Explicit non-consumer cases excluded in this period: 161.

Withdrawn cases identified in report addenda in this period: 6 (excluded; a withdrawn case may already be absent from the XML body).

Method and limitations

Source: OPSS product safety alerts on GOV.UK. We use the alert date in the source metadata, not the publication or import date. Origin is read from the Country of Origin field; China, PRC and People’s Republic of China are normalised to China. Hong Kong stays separate. Missing or explicitly unknown origin is classified as unknown. Denominators include all origins. Hazards are deterministic keyword classifications of the Hazard section; one alert can have multiple hazards, so hazard totals can exceed alert counts. Chemical substances are recorded where named. Regulation names are extracted from the source wording; missing names are not inferred. These alerts are not a representative sample of imports and do not establish a failure rate or relative product safety.

Source alerts with no alert date, excluded from monthly counts: 3.
