How to qualify chemical drum and IBC liners

Qualify the complete packaging assembly against the exact formulation and intended filling, storage and transport conditions. Agree acceptance limits before testing, check product quality as well as containment, and obtain written carrier acceptance before shipment. Coordinate factory samples and records through Cambridge China Bridge.

Define the formulation and complete assembly

Give the laboratory the exact formulation revision, ingredient concentration ranges, impurities, SDS and intended shelf life under suitable confidentiality arrangements. Describe filling temperature, storage conditions, transport exposure, headspace and dispensing practices. A compatibility chart for a named chemical is a screening aid; it does not establish suitability for your mixture.

Identify every wetted component: liner film, seams, drum coating, closure, gasket, valve and any adhesive. Record material grades, dimensions, suppliers and assembly instructions, including closure tightening. Freeze these details in the product specification, with changes requiring buyer approval.

Agree a formulation-specific compatibility trial

Ask a competent laboratory to propose a safe protocol using actual production materials and the formulation. Include liquid and vapour exposure, representative storage conditions and justified challenging conditions. Define sampling points, controls and acceptance limits before starting. Accelerated exposure needs a technical justification before it can support a shelf-life claim.

Assess swelling, softening, brittleness, cracking, delamination and changes in gasket sealing performance. Test the assembled pack after ageing as well as separate material specimens. Department for Transport guidance says dangerous-goods packaging materials must be compatible with their contents; the filler, packer or consignor is responsible for ensuring this.

Separate permeation from contamination

Permeation can occur through an apparently intact material. Ask the laboratory to distinguish losses through the liner wall from leakage at seams, valves or closures. Track mass and formulation composition against suitable controls under recorded conditions. Do not treat an absence of visible liquid outside the pack as proof that volatile ingredients remain contained.

Check whether contact with the packaging changes purity, colour, odour, active ingredient content or downstream processing performance. Ask for targeted assessment of extractables, particles and manufacturing residues where relevant. Compare exposed product with a suitably stored control, and investigate both material-derived contamination and contamination introduced during liner manufacture or filling.

Test the aged, filled pack for leakage

Reproduce liner installation, filling, closure tightening and pallet restraint using production equipment where possible. Inspect folds trapped under seals, damaged necks, seam defects and valve connections. Have specialists select safe leak and handling tests for the filled assembly, including relevant pressure changes, vibration, stacking and orientation. Record the condition of both packaging and product after testing.

Department for Transport guidance states that a packaging approval mark does not necessarily confirm suitability for any substance. Ask the packaging supplier and test specialist to confirm whether the proposed liner, closure and gasket configuration is covered by the approval evidence. Treat a substituted gasket or liner grade as a change needing review, even if it fits.

Close the carrier and production approval gates

Before booking, give the proposed carrier or forwarder the formulation's transport classification, SDS, packaging specification, approval documents, closure instructions and relevant trial results. Request written acceptance for the actual goods, pack and route, including connecting carriers where applicable. Ask what documents or restrictions remain outstanding. Use the SDS and shipping documents guide when assembling the submission.

Release production only after the buyer's technical owner signs off the trial report and unresolved failures are closed. Retain formulation and component revisions, batch identities, photographs, raw results and approved assembly settings. Use the supplier qualification guide for factory and pilot gates. Cambridge China Bridge's staff in China can coordinate samples and factory records; the buyer retains technical approval.

Frequently asked questions

Is a chemical compatibility chart enough?

Use it to screen materials. Qualify your exact mixture, concentration ranges, exposure conditions and complete assembly through an agreed trial.

Does an approved drum cover any liner or gasket?

Ask the supplier and test specialist to confirm the exact configuration against the approval evidence. A matching fit does not establish equivalent chemical or sealing performance.

Can a pack pass a leak test but lose solvent?

Yes. Permeation through intact material can differ from leakage at a joint. Ask the laboratory to assess mass loss and composition changes as well as visible leaks.

When should I ask the carrier to accept the packaging?

Submit the proposed goods, packaging and route before booking. Obtain written acceptance, resolve outstanding conditions and recheck acceptance after relevant changes.
