Importing model rocket motors from China to the UK
Before ordering, obtain advice on the exact motor and packaging, resolve applicable import and acquisition permissions, arrange lawful storage, and secure carrier and launch-site acceptance. Make payment conditional on these checks. Factory documents can be collected by Cambridge China Bridge.

Get advice on the exact motor
Ask the factory for the manufacturer, model, composition, net explosive content, construction drawings, instructions, packaging specification and classification documents. Identify separately any igniters, reloads or loose propellant included. Use our product specification guide to keep the enquiry tied to the goods you will actually receive.
Send this file to HSE for product-specific advice. Ask HSE to confirm the classification requirements before carriage in Great Britain. Ask whether the supplied classification is acceptable or needs recognition or a new application, and whether the motor is treated as a civil explosive or pyrotechnic article. Do not infer the answer from its hobby description or motor letter code.
Resolve import and acquisition permissions separately
Imports of civil explosives into Great Britain require HSE authorisation. Ask HSE whether this applies to your motor and what transfer documents your proposed journey needs. Use our import licence guide for the separate tariff and import-control checks. State whether the destination is Great Britain or Northern Ireland, and request advice for that destination.
Acquiring or keeping relevant explosives requires an explosives certificate. Ask your local police explosives liaison officer whether the exact motors and accompanying items require a certificate or qualify for an exemption. Explain whether you will use them immediately or keep them. Ask for the basis of any exemption in writing; resolve acquisition, transfer and storage questions separately.
Arrange lawful storage before delivery
HSE says a storage licence is generally needed before storing explosives. Send the licensing authority your product classification, hazard type, net explosive content, existing explosive stock, address and expected storage period. Ask whether a licence or a specific exemption applies, and which separation and security arrangements your proposal needs.
Include early delivery, postponed launches and unused motors in the plan. If using a specialist store, obtain written acceptance for the actual motors and confirm who receives them, controls storage and releases them for collection. Do not treat a club's storage arrangements as permission to keep the same goods at home.
Get carrier acceptance for the complete journey
Use our dangerous-goods shipping guide for the general packing and booking checklist. Give a specialist forwarder the motor classification, accompanying igniters or propellant, package details and delivery address. Request written acceptance covering collection, international transport, handling and final delivery to the agreed store.
Ask what happens if a carrier rejects the goods or delivery fails. Agree the arrangements for holding, returning or otherwise dealing with the consignment before dispatch. Recheck acceptance if the factory changes the motor, explosive content, packaging or route. A quotation for ordinary parcels does not establish acceptance of your motors.

Confirm the launch site before paying
Send the proposed motor and rocket specification to the launch organiser before buying. Ask whether that combination is accepted and what competence, insurance and safety evidence the organiser expects. Obtain the landowner's agreement. Ask the Civil Aviation Authority about applicable airspace conditions, notifications or permissions for the proposed rocket, flight and location; do not use motor classification as launch clearance.
Keep the authority advice, applicable issued permissions, storage arrangements, carrier acceptance and site agreement together. Make your purchasing decision conditional on resolving each point, with another review after any product or route change. Cambridge China Bridge's staff in China can collect and reconcile factory documents for the advisers reviewing your order.
