Shipping batteries and dangerous goods from China
Before booking, confirm the exact goods and their transport classification, match transport evidence to the supplied model, check the finished packaging and obtain written carrier acceptance for the proposed route. Ask Cambridge China Bridge to coordinate factory evidence and packing checks through its staff in China.

Establish exactly what will travel
The consignor is responsible for classifying, marking and packaging dangerous goods. Identify who will act as consignor and who will prepare the transport documents. Give a dangerous goods specialist the actual product specification rather than relying on a supplier's description such as accessories or electronic parts.
For batteries, record the chemistry, cell and battery model, capacity, energy rating and condition. Explain whether batteries travel alone, packed alongside equipment or installed in it. For chemicals, aerosols and other possible dangerous goods, gather composition and hazard information. Ask the specialist to confirm the UN number, proper shipping name, hazard class and packing group where applicable.
Match transport evidence to the supplied goods
For lithium batteries, ask for the transport test summary and the supporting report reference. Match the manufacturer, model, physical description and ratings to the battery actually supplied, including batteries hidden inside equipment. Ask the laboratory or report issuer to resolve mismatches. Our guide to verifying product test reports explains how to check authenticity and scope.
Ask the specialist which transport declaration and supporting documents the proposed shipment needs. Have any claimed exemption explained in writing against the actual goods, quantities, packaging and route. Use our guide to SDS and dangerous goods documents when a supplier offers a safety data sheet as its entire shipping file.
Check the completed packaging
Dangerous goods must be packaged and labelled appropriately. Ask the specialist to specify the packing method and markings for the chosen transport mode and classification, including whether certified packaging is needed. Where specified, obtain the packaging certificate, relevant test evidence and assembly instructions before the factory orders packing materials.
Inspect finished packs against the agreed instructions. For batteries, check terminal protection, separation from conductive items, restraint against movement and protection against accidental activation. For liquids, check closures and leak protection. Photograph inner packing, closures, outer markings and pallet arrangements. Hold leaking, swollen or damaged goods for specialist review before dispatch.
Obtain acceptance for the actual route
Send the forwarder the classification, transport evidence, package details, quantities, weights and packing photographs before accepting a booking. Request written confirmation that the intended carrier accepts this consignment on the proposed service. A freight quotation or a supplier's claim that it has shipped similar goods before is not that confirmation.
Include collection, consolidation, transfers and UK delivery in the discussion. Ask who checks acceptance at each stage and whether the cargo may share space with other goods. Record any carrier conditions, including charge state, packaging or document requests, and have the factory confirm it can meet them before promising a dispatch date.
Set a release gate before booking
Keep a shipment file containing the agreed classification, model-matched evidence, packing instructions, inspection photographs, transport documents and carrier acceptance. Name the person who will release the goods. Recheck acceptance if the battery model, composition, quantity, packaging or route changes.
Hold booking while evidence is missing, documents disagree or packing remains unresolved. Keep customs preparation alongside this transport review using our UK customs documents guide. Cambridge China Bridge can coordinate supplier records and checks of the packed goods through its staff in China, with specialist questions referred for transport review.
Frequently asked questions
Can I ship batteries inside equipment as ordinary cargo?
Describe the installed battery to the dangerous goods specialist and carrier. Obtain classification and acceptance for that configuration before booking.
What battery documents should I ask the factory for?
Ask for the exact battery specification, transport test summary and supporting report reference. Match them to the supplied model, then ask the specialist what shipment documents are needed.
Does a freight quote mean the carrier accepts dangerous goods?
Obtain separate written acceptance for the actual goods, packaging and proposed service. Keep it with the booking file and resolve any conditions before dispatch.
What if the supplier changes the battery before shipment?
Hold release. Match the replacement to its transport evidence and ask the specialist and carrier to review the changed configuration before confirming the booking.
