How to verify a product test report
Verify the report directly with its issuing laboratory, then match the tested sample, configuration and test scope to your purchase specification. Resolve missing pages, unexplained variants and material changes before accepting it as evidence for your order. Checks in China can be coordinated by Cambridge China Bridge.

Identify the laboratory that did the work
Ask for the complete report, including photographs, appendices and amendments. Record the issuing laboratory's legal name, testing site, report reference, issue date and accreditation details. Distinguish the laboratory from the supplier or intermediary that forwarded the document. Ask whether any work was subcontracted and which laboratory performed it.
Government guidance recommends accreditation as a means of demonstrating competence. As a buyer check, consult the named accreditation body's directory and scope schedule: compare the laboratory site, test methods and product or material categories. Ask about its status when testing took place and any work outside the accredited scope. Our inspection company guide covers choosing a provider.
Trace the tested sample to your order
Compare the sample description and photographs with your purchase specification, approved sample and production records. Check model markings, manufacturer, factory site, materials, colour, dimensions, ratings, power supply and relevant components. Record discrepancies rather than accepting the supplier's statement that the products are the same.
Ask who selected the sample, where it came from and how it reached the laboratory. Request collection photographs, batch references, seal records and the laboratory's sample receipt details where available. A supplier-submitted development sample leaves a gap between the tested item and production. Our bulk production guide explains how to control that gap.
Check each model variant and change
Create a comparison sheet listing each ordered variant against the tested configuration. Include changes in enclosure, material, colourant, battery, power supply, electronics and intended use. A shared product name or similar photograph is insufficient grounds to accept coverage.
Where a report lists a model family, ask the laboratory which variants were tested and why the results are considered applicable to the others. Request written technical reasoning tied to the differences, with supporting drawings or component lists. Ask the laboratory whether changes since testing need further assessment or testing. Do not let the supplier add models to the report itself.
Read the test scope behind the pass result
Compare the report's methods, standard editions, tested clauses and acceptance criteria with the test plan agreed for your product and destination. Read exclusions, deviations, untested clauses and inconclusive results. Ask a competent product specialist to resolve gaps; a pass against a limited scope does not answer every question about the product.
Check the conditions as well as the method: intended use, operating settings, exposure conditions and sample preparation. A material test may describe a component rather than the finished article. Ask the laboratory what its conclusion actually covers. Our CE, UKCA and ISO guide explains the separate roles of reports, markings and conformity documents.
Authenticate the report and record your decision
Find the laboratory's contact details independently of the supplier's document. Send the complete report and ask it to confirm the reference, applicant, sample identity, issue date, revision and results. Ask whether the document is complete and whether a later amendment or replacement exists. A verification code or scan result is useful only if you also confirm the website belongs to the issuer.
If confidentiality prevents confirmation, ask the applicant to authorise disclosure or arrange a direct introduction. Silence is an unresolved check. Keep the laboratory's reply, your comparison sheet and the final report together, and record whether you accept the evidence, need clarification or require fresh testing. Cambridge China Bridge's staff in China can help coordinate sample identification and testing arrangements.
Frequently asked questions
How do I check whether a test report is genuine?
Contact the issuing laboratory through independently found details. Ask it to confirm the complete report, sample identity, revision and results, including any amendments or replacement.
Does a report for a similar model cover my product?
Do not assume coverage. Compare the configurations and ask the laboratory for written reasoning explaining which variants its results cover and whether further testing is needed.
Is an accredited laboratory's report enough?
Check the relevant site and test scope, then verify sample identity and authenticity. Accreditation does not establish that the tested sample matches your ordered goods.
Does an old test report need replacing?
Age alone does not resolve coverage. Check product changes, test methods and the report's status with the laboratory, then ask whether updated assessment or fresh testing is needed.
