Sourcing frameless torque motors from China

The selected heading 8501 lines for frameless torque motors from China carry 0% UK duty, with no anti-dumping duty recorded. Confirm applicable electrical safety rules with the relevant authority, providing the rated voltage; agree rotor fit, cooling and drive compatibility before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge sources frameless torque motors.

Zero duty on the selected motor lines

Heading 8501 covers electric motors and generators, excluding generating sets. This guide concerns frameless torque motors supplied as matched rotor and stator sets for integration into a machine. The table shows possible motor lines by electrical design and output, including very small and large variants; it does not establish the classification of every frameless kit or separately supplied component.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 4 October 2026, the selected lines carried 0% duty for goods from China. Their records contain no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control. Import VAT at 20% still applies. These findings concern the selected lines, rather than every specialised product within the heading.

Give your customs broker the winding type, rated mechanical output, drawings and details of exactly what is shipped. Confirm the commodity code before ordering, particularly where the supplied extract does not show your output band. See the wider electric motor guide for other motor families.

Specify the rotor, stator and installed duty

Specify continuous and peak torque separately, with the permitted peak duration, speed range, winding temperature and cooling arrangement used for each claim. Ask for torque constant, back electromotive force, phase resistance and inductance, stating the measurement conventions. Agree the drive, feedback device, commutation arrangement and temperature sensor before approving a sample.

Freeze drawings for the stator outside diameter, rotor bore, active length, mounting surfaces and installed air gap. State who supplies the housing, bearings, shaft, adhesive and feedback mounting. Require a test fixture that represents the intended heat path and mounting arrangement; a torque result from a different cooled housing may not represent your machine.

For Great Britain, confirm with the relevant authority whether the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 apply to the supplied motor and its rated voltage, and what technical documentation, declaration of conformity, UKCA or CE marking and importer identification are needed. Also confirm whether the actual motor design falls within induction motor ecodesign requirements, rather than relying on its sales name or the wider guide.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative pilot batch of matched frameless rotor and stator sets under 8501 52 20 89, invoiced at £12,000 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £12,600. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £12,600, so it is £2,520. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Fit: measure rotor and stator mounting dimensions against the approved drawings, and inspect laminations, winding ends and magnet retention for damage.

Windings: compare phase resistance, inductance, insulation resistance and lead identification with the approved sample and factory test records.

Installed performance: test continuous torque, temperature rise and low-speed torque ripple in the agreed fixture, using the intended drive and cooling conditions.

Arrival condition: check matched-set identification, protected magnet surfaces, secure packing and dry windings. Record defects before installation; use the inspection guide to plan sampling.

What goes wrong

Peak torque is presented as continuous torque, or a favourable cooling fixture hides overheating in the buyer's housing. Conflicting current conventions can also make torque figures difficult to compare. Resolve these points through a witnessed sample test with recorded winding temperature and drive settings.

A rotor may fit the bore but leave the wrong air gap after assembly. Damaged magnets, winding abrasion or incorrect feedback alignment can cause rubbing, uneven motion or excess current. Keep an approved matched set and require written agreement before changes to magnets, windings or mounting dimensions.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on frameless torque motors from China?

The selected heading 8501 motor lines carry 0% duty in the supplied tariff data, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty recorded. Confirm the exact code for the shipped set. Import VAT is 20%.

Do frameless torque motors need electrical safety documentation?

Confirm with the relevant authority whether the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations apply and what technical documentation, declaration of conformity, UKCA or CE marking and importer identification are needed. Assess the supplied motor and its rated voltage.

Are frameless motor kits covered by waste electrical equipment rules?

Official guidance says components and sub-assemblies supplied to a business for building a finished product are not electrical and electronic equipment products. Check whether your supply is a component or finished equipment.

How do I compare continuous torque between factories?

Ask each factory to use the same mounting fixture, cooling arrangement, winding temperature criterion and current convention. Compare recorded load tests, rather than catalogue torque alone.
