Sourcing brushless DC motors from China

Brushless DC motors from China carry 0% UK duty across the selected lines, so the duty range is uniformly zero. Match the complete tariff description, not just the motor name. Confirm whether ecodesign requirements apply with the relevant authority; assess electrical rules separately. Cambridge China Bridge sources brushless DC motors.

Duty and classification for brushless DC motors

Heading 8501 covers electric motors and generators, excluding generating sets. This guide selects brushless DC motor lines for steering, bicycle and equipment applications. Each specialised description includes conditions beyond the application name. A motor sold as a bicycle motor does not automatically qualify for a bicycle-specific line.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, the selected lines carried 0% duty for goods from China. Their records show no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control. The heading's recorded authorised-use suspension concerns a separate AC commutator motor line, rather than these brushless DC motors.

Give your customs broker the output rating, supply voltage, dimensions, controller details and intended application to confirm the commodity code. The table descriptions are shortened and do not replace the complete tariff conditions. See the wider electric motor guide and import duty and VAT guide. For shaded-pole motors, see our shaded-pole motor sourcing guide. For brushed DC motors, see our brushed DC motor sourcing guide. For induction motors, see our three-phase induction motor sourcing guide. For synchronous reluctance motors, see our synchronous reluctance motor sourcing guide.

Specify the motor and controller together

Specify supply voltage, continuous shaft output, torque-speed curve, duty cycle, cooling conditions and permitted temperature rise. Record shaft and flange drawings, bearing type, connector pin assignments, rotor-position feedback and whether the controller is included. Ask the factory to demonstrate starting under load with the controller and cable arrangement you intend to use.

Confirm whether the supplied brushless DC motor falls within ecodesign requirements with the relevant authority. Also confirm whether the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations apply to its intended supply voltage and which technical documentation, declaration of conformity, CE or UKCA marking and importer identification requirements apply.

The Electromagnetic Compatibility Regulations apply to electrical and electronic equipment liable to generate electromagnetic disturbance, subject to exceptions. Assess the supplied motor-controller arrangement rather than assuming low supply voltage settles compliance. Where the finished product falls within the hazardous-substances restriction rules, its manufacturer must maintain technical documentation demonstrating compliance. Arrange testing and certification around the exact supplied configuration.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of 400 brushless DC steering motors meeting every condition of this line under 8501 31 00 45, invoiced at £48,000 free on board, with £2,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £50,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £50,500, so it is £10,100. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity and fit: on arrival, compare model and batch identification, shaft dimensions, flange holes, connectors and cable lengths with the approved sample and drawings.

Controller and feedback: check phase and sensor wiring against the agreed diagram, then test direction, loaded starting and speed control with the approved controller.

Performance and heat: measure shaft torque, speed and input current under the agreed load and cooling conditions. Record temperature rise rather than accepting a brief unloaded demonstration.

Bearings and packing: check shaft runout, bearing noise, vibration, housing seals and transit damage. Agree these checks in the inspection brief before shipment.

What goes wrong

A replacement motor can fit mechanically yet fail to start because its sensor sequence or connector wiring differs from the approved unit. A claimed peak output can also be mistaken for continuous output, leaving the motor overheating in the intended duty. Require test records that identify the motor, controller, load and cooling arrangement.

Changes to bearings, windings, magnets or controller settings can alter noise, heat and torque without changing the model label. Retain an approved sample and require written agreement before substitutions. Check repeated deliveries against that sample, including the wiring diagram and loaded performance.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For components and parts, see sourcing for manufacturers.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on brushless DC motors from China?

The selected brushless DC motor lines carry 0% duty in the supplied tariff records, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Confirm the complete description for your motor.

Do brushless DC motors need an induction-motor efficiency class?

Confirm whether ecodesign requirements apply to the supplied brushless DC motor with the relevant authority. Still agree efficiency and torque testing for your actual duty.

Can I use my existing controller with a Chinese brushless motor?

Ask for connector and sensor wiring diagrams, then test the motor with your actual controller under load. Matching voltage and connector shape alone does not establish compatibility.

What should I check when the motors arrive?

Check identification, shaft and flange dimensions, wiring, loaded starting, torque, current, temperature rise and bearing noise against the approved sample and specification.
