Sourcing shaded-pole motors from China
The selected shaded-pole motor lines carry 0% UK duty from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty recorded. Confirm with the relevant product safety authority whether the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 apply to the exact mains-voltage motor. Specify mechanical output separately from electrical input. Cambridge China Bridge sources shaded-pole motors.

Duty and classification for shaded-pole motors
Heading 8501 covers electric motors and generators, excluding generating sets. For shaded-pole motors, the relevant general lines distinguish AC motors with output not exceeding 37,5 W from other single-phase AC motors. The table repeats codes for different applications; these are application examples within the same commodity lines.
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, the selected lines carried 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied records show no anti-dumping duty, countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control for these lines. Import VAT is normally 20%. Zero duty does not remove electrical safety obligations.
Confirm the commodity code using the motor construction and rated mechanical output, rather than its electrical input consumption. These rows describe motors supplied separately; have your broker check an assembled fan or appliance separately. See the wider electric motor guide for other motor families.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shaded-pole fan motors, output not exceeding 37,5 W | 8501 10 93 90 | 0% | None |
| Other shaded-pole fan motors, output above 37,5 W and not exceeding 750 W | 8501 40 20 80 | 0% | None |
Specify rotation, load and mounting
State the supply voltage and frequency, mechanical output, input consumption, loaded speed and rotation viewed from a named shaft end. Provide the shaft drawing, mounting-hole positions, bracket arrangement, lead length and connector drawing. Identify whether the order includes the impeller or only the motor.
Agree starting tests with the actual impeller or driven load, the operating ambient conditions and mounting orientation. Specify winding material, insulation, thermal protection, bearing type and lubrication. Ask the factory to identify the shaded-pole construction and retain an approved sample rather than accepting a visually similar replacement.
Confirm with the relevant product safety authority which technical documentation, declaration of conformity, CE or UKCA marking and importer identification requirements apply to the exact motor. For motors within the electrical safety rules, the importer must ensure that accompanying instructions are in easily understandable English. Official hazardous-substance guidance distinguishes component parts sold business-to-business from equipment placed on the market; establish the supply status and request material evidence for the intended assembly. Use testing and certification to define the evidence needed.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of 400 shaded-pole refrigeration fan motors; FOB and freight values are illustrative under 8501 10 93 90, invoiced at £12,000 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £12,600. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £12,600, so it is £2,520. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Identity and fit: compare model markings, shaft dimensions, mounting holes, brackets and connectors with the approved drawing and sample.
Starting and rotation: test with the agreed load, confirm rotation from the specified viewing end and check repeated starts without hand assistance.
Heat and bearings: run in the agreed orientation and ambient conditions; record current, input consumption, loaded speed, temperature rise, vibration and bearing noise.
Windings and packing: inspect shading rings, winding workmanship, lead restraint and insulation test records; check thermal protection against the specification and protect shafts from impact. Agree sampling through the inspection guide.

What goes wrong
A motor can fit the bracket yet turn the wrong way or fail to start the intended impeller. An input-power figure can also be mistaken for mechanical output, leading to an unsuitable replacement and an incorrect classification brief. Approve the motor under load in the buyer's installation before accepting production.
Bearing drag, shaft misalignment, loose shading rings and changed winding materials can produce noise, heat or unreliable starting. Keep the approved sample and test records, require written agreement before material or bearing changes, and compare arrival samples with the shipment inspection results.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on shaded-pole motors from China?
The selected general AC motor lines carry 0% duty in the supplied tariff records, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Import VAT is normally 20%.
Which power rating determines the commodity code?
Use rated mechanical output rather than electrical input consumption. Give the broker the construction, output rating and details of anything supplied with the motor.
What documents should I request for a mains-voltage motor?
Request technical documentation, a declaration of conformity, CE or UKCA marking and importer identification. Accompanying instructions must be in easily understandable English.
How do I check a shaded-pole replacement motor?
Compare shaft and mounting dimensions, rotation from the named viewing end, connector, starting under the actual load, loaded speed, heat and bearing noise.
