Sourcing electric vibration motors from China

Electric vibration motors from China carry 0% UK duty on the selected lines, so the duty range is zero throughout. Electrical safety requirements depend on supply voltage, while induction-motor ecodesign scope needs checking against the actual design and duty. Cambridge China Bridge sources electric vibration motors.

Zero duty on the selected vibration-motor lines

Heading 8501 covers electric motors and generators, excluding generating sets. This guide concerns motors that produce vibration through eccentric weights. The table gives candidate lines for different motor types and mechanical output ratings; it does not classify a complete vibrating machine. For the reverse trade route, see exporting UK electric motors to China.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, the selected lines carried 0% duty for goods from China. They show no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control. A suspension recorded elsewhere in the heading concerns a specified motor for vacuum-cleaner manufacture, rather than a general vibration-motor concession. Import VAT is normally 20%.

Confirm the commodity code using the motor construction, phase arrangement and rated mechanical output, rather than vibration force or electrical input power. The wider electric-motor guide covers other motor families. For switched reluctance designs, see our switched reluctance motor sourcing guide.

Specify vibration force and mounting together

Specify supply voltage, frequency, phase, mechanical output, speed, duty cycle and the required centrifugal force at the agreed eccentric-weight setting. Include mounting-hole positions, foot dimensions, cable entry, bearing type, lubrication and enclosure protection. Ask for a drawing showing weight adjustment and clearance inside the covers.

Confirm with the relevant authority whether the motor falls within the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 and which technical documentation, declaration of conformity, CE or UKCA marking and importer identification requirements apply to its supply voltage. Equipment placed on the Great Britain market within those Regulations must have easily understandable English instructions.

Check induction-motor ecodesign applicability against the design, rating, continuous-duty capability and direct-on-line operation described in the wider guide. Also determine whether hazardous-substance restrictions apply to the supplied product or finished assembly. Official guidance requires manufacturers to establish component compliance before incorporating components into an assembly covered by those restrictions.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of 400 small single-phase vibration motors; FOB value and freight are illustrative under 8501 40 20 80, invoiced at £2,500 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £3,100. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £3,100, so it is £620. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Weights and covers: check eccentric-weight positions against the approved setting, locking arrangements, cover clearance and signs of contact during operation.

Mounting and housing: measure hole centres and foot dimensions against the drawing; inspect castings, threads, cable glands and seals for damage on arrival.

Running performance: test on an agreed fixture at the specified supply and weight setting; record speed, current, vibration output, bearing noise and temperature rise against agreed acceptance criteria.

Identification and documents: match the nameplate, winding connection, batch identification and applicable conformity documents to the delivered model. Use quality inspection to plan checks before shipment and on arrival.

What goes wrong

Matching motor power alone can produce the wrong vibration. Different eccentric weights or settings change the force, while a different mounting arrangement changes the machine's response. Compare production motors with the approved sample on the same fixture and record the weight setting used.

Loose weight fasteners, damaged covers, noisy bearings and unsuitable lubrication can cause early failures. Transit damage to mounting feet can prevent installation even when the motor runs. Agree packaging that supports the housing and protects the feet, terminal box and weight covers.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on vibration motors from China?

The selected heading 8501 lines carry 0% duty for goods from China in the supplied tariff snapshot, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Import VAT is normally 20%.

How do I specify a vibration motor for a feeder?

Give the required force, speed, supply, duty cycle and weight setting, together with mounting dimensions. Approve a sample on the intended machine or an agreed representative fixture.

Do vibration motors need English instructions?

Yes, when covered by the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations and placed on the Great Britain market. The importer must ensure instructions are in easily understandable English.

Can the same power rating replace my existing vibration motor?

Power alone is insufficient. Compare force at the specified weight setting, speed, mounting dimensions, supply, duty cycle and bearing arrangement before approving a replacement.
