How to export electric motors to China

Export through a Chinese importer after confirming the motor's tariff line and CCC scope. Small-power motors face a change to third-party CCC certification from 1 January 2027, so settle certification before shipment. Cambridge China Bridge's own staff in China find and check Chinese importers and distributors for UK brands.

Choose the route for your motor or generator

Electric motors and generators need model-specific classification and a CCC scope check before shipment. Give the importer the output rating, electrical type and intended use. The category covers HS 8501-8503 (25 subheadings); a motor, an alternator, a generating set and a spare part need separate classification decisions.

HMRC recorded £26.5m of UK goods exports to mainland China under 25 HS6 subheadings in 2025 (2024: £19.6m, +35%). Exports to Hong Kong under the same codes were £6.0m. January to July 2026: £13.8m against £13.4m in the same months of 2025 (+2.6%). These are UK exports under the HS codes listed above.

The largest UK export line was 85016200, AC generators of an output > 75 kVA but <= 375 kVA, at £4.5m. Treat that HS-line total as context for choosing buyers, rather than evidence of demand for your particular model.

Resolve CCC before accepting the shipment date

The CCC reference table identifies small-power motors under 8501520000, 8501320000, 8501510090, 8501200000, 8501310000 and 8501400000, with self-declaration as the evaluation method. A reference-code match is a reason to check the actual product scope, rather than assume every motor within that code follows the same requirement.

For small-power motors in scope, conversion to third-party certification must be completed by 31 December 2026. From 1 January 2027, they must have a CCC certificate and carry the CCC mark before import or the other activities specified in the announcement. Allow months, not weeks, for approval; the Chinese authority decides. Put the applicable certification route into your supply agreement.

Price against the Chinese tariff line

The selected lines below show why one duty allowance cannot cover the whole range. The supplied Chinese tariff rates give wind-powered generating sets under 85023100 an MFN rate of 8% and a provisional rate of 5% for 2026; parts under 85030030 have an MFN rate of 3% and a provisional rate of 1% for 2026. Confirm the complete Chinese tariff line before quoting.

Import VAT generally uses the 13% rate, subject to the statutory exceptions. Its base is customs value plus customs duty plus consumption tax. The importer's customs adviser confirms whether consumption tax applies to the product. Border taxes add to landed cost and shape the price the importer can offer you.

Prepare the UK export declaration

For exports from England, Scotland or Wales, obtain a GB EORI and classify each model under the correct UK commodity code. The online export declaration needs value, weight, packaging, destination, transport and invoice and packing-list references. Give the carrier the invoice and any applicable export licences or certificates. Agree who will make the declaration, and keep its product description consistent with the technical information supplied to the Chinese importer.

Use retail e-commerce only for the listed toy motors

The cross-border e-commerce retail import list covers Chinese line 85011010 for toy motors with output ≤37.5W. That limited entry does not provide a retail route for the entire motor range. Listed goods entering through bonded 1210 or direct 9610 channels receive personal-use supervision, with first-import licence, registration and filing requirements disapplied, subject to the stated epidemic-area and emergency-risk exceptions.

The overseas retail business retains the main product quality and safety responsibility and must appoint a mainland-registered company for customs registration, truthful declaration and shared civil liability. The consumer risk notice states that purchases are for personal use and cannot be resold. Transaction limits are RMB 5,000 per purchase and RMB 26,000 annually per person; assess this route separately from distributor stock.

Frequently asked questions

Do my electric motors need CCC for China?

Check the actual product scope. The CCC reference table identifies small-power motors against six commodity codes, including 8501520000 and 8501310000; a code match alone should not settle the model's treatment.

What changes for small-power motors in 2027?

Conversion to third-party CCC certification must be completed by 31 December 2026. From 1 January 2027, in-scope small-power motors need a CCC certificate and CCC mark before import.

What duty applies to wind-powered generating sets?

Chinese tariff line 85023100 has an MFN rate of 8% and a provisional 2026 rate of 5%. Import VAT also affects landed cost; confirm classification and the applicable treatment before quoting.

Can I sell industrial motors through cross-border retail?

The identified list entry is 85011010 for toy motors with output ≤37.5W. It does not cover the whole industrial range, and retail imports under this route are for personal use and cannot be resold.
