Can I order an air rifle or air pistol from China?
You may be able to order one for target shooting, but resolve the exact weapon’s classification, destination, import permission and lawful handover before paying. Ask the relevant police firearms licensing team about possession and age restrictions, and check import permission separately. Factory information can be gathered by Cambridge China Bridge.

Send the police a file for the exact weapon
Ask the factory for the model, calibre, projectile type, power source, firing mechanism, barrel and overall dimensions, photographs and muzzle-energy test evidence. Include any adjustable settings and the exact configuration offered. Send this with your intended target-shooting use, storage address and delivery destination to the relevant police firearms licensing team.
Ask for a written classification response and what further evidence they need. A product listing saying “target pistol” is not enough for your purchasing decision. Keep this enquiry separate from tariff classification and the general checks in our import licence guide.
Resolve power and prohibited-weapon classification
For England, Wales and Scotland, an air rifle with muzzle energy above 12 foot-pounds requires a firearm certificate. Air pistols above 6 foot-pounds, and certain other air weapons, are prohibited and require special authority. Do not treat a powerful pistol as something an ordinary firearm certificate automatically permits.
Ask the police to assess the mechanism, power source and dimensions as well as the energy evidence. Ask who should assess an uncertain model before import, rather than arranging to receive it and test it yourself. Specify the agreed configuration in the order and reopen the enquiry if the factory proposes a change.
Check possession against the actual destination
Ordinary low-powered air weapons generally do not require a possession certificate in England and Wales. Scotland has separate air-weapon certification: ask Police Scotland whether a certificate, permit or exemption covers your purchase and possession. In Northern Ireland, air guns above 1 joule are subject to firearm certificate control; ask the Police Service of Northern Ireland about your exact model.
Explain who will own, receive, store and use the weapon. Ask about personal eligibility, any possession prohibition, the proposed shooting location and storage arrangements. If buying stock for resale, raise dealer registration explicitly: trading in air weapons is subject to registration requirements.
Resolve import permission separately
Ask the Department for Business and Trade’s import licensing team whether your exact weapon and route need an import licence or qualify for an exemption. Home Office guidance says the low-powered air-weapon import exemption does not apply to Northern Ireland. Do not assume that an England and Wales possession exemption answers a China-to-Northern-Ireland import enquiry.
Describe whether this is a personal purchase or commercial stock, and identify the importer and proposed recipient. Ask the police which possession documents must be in place and ask import licensing which import documents are needed. Where an import licence is required, apply before transport to the UK. Use our customs documents guide for the wider shipment file.
Settle age checks and the handover route
In England and Wales, a person under 18 cannot purchase or hire an air weapon or its ammunition. Permission for supervised shooting is a separate issue. Tell the police the buyer’s and intended user’s ages, and ask which purchase, possession and supervision rules apply at the destination.
Commercial air-weapon sales to individuals who are not registered firearms dealers in England and Wales require an in-person transfer involving the buyer and seller or an authorised representative. Ask how this applies to your overseas purchase, and whether a registered dealer should receive it for collection. For Scotland and Northern Ireland, obtain destination-specific handover advice. Confirm the carrier’s acceptance and the recipient’s identity checks before agreeing delivery.

Make payment conditional on a resolved route
Before paying, keep the model file, police correspondence, import licensing response, required permissions and receiving dealer’s agreement together. Record who authorises shipment and what happens if classification or permission remains unresolved. Do not let the factory substitute a different mechanism or power configuration without another review.
Use our pre-payment checklist for the supplier, goods and documents. Cambridge China Bridge’s staff in China can gather factory specifications and check the offered configuration against the order. Agree the scope of that work separately from the police and import licensing decisions.
Frequently asked questions
Can I import an air rifle from China for target shooting?
Possibly. Send the exact model and destination to the police licensing team, resolve possession and import permission separately, and agree a supported delivery route before paying.
Does an air pistol above 6 foot-pounds need a licence?
In England, Wales and Scotland, it is a prohibited weapon requiring special authority. Do not assume an ordinary firearm certificate is enough. Ask the relevant police team before ordering.
Can someone under 18 buy an air rifle?
In England and Wales, under-18s cannot purchase or hire an air weapon or its ammunition. Supervised use is a separate question. Ask the destination’s police team about the intended user.
Can the Chinese factory courier an air pistol to my home?
Do not agree home delivery before resolving the handover rules. Ask the police whether dealer receipt and collection are appropriate, then confirm carrier acceptance and identity checks.
