How to test LED luminaire shipping packs
Test production-representative luminaires in their intended shipping packs against the actual delivery route. Agree damage limits beforehand, record their condition before transport, then inspect diffusers, internal restraints and finishes before checking operation safely. Cambridge China Bridge can coordinate factory trials with its own staff in China.

Define the pack and the journey being approved
Approve a named luminaire configuration and packaging revision together. Record diffuser material, driver mounting, accessories, protective film, cushioning, carton construction and packing arrangement. Use the commercial lighting guide for product specifications and compliance evidence; this guide covers damage and performance after transport.
Map handling from factory dispatch through freight, warehouse receipt and final delivery, including unpacking or repacking. Ask a packaging laboratory to propose representative vibration, impact and compression trials, with environmental conditioning where relevant. Agree the sequence, severity, sample selection and acceptance criteria before testing. The distribution-route packaging guide covers the wider route assessment.
Record the starting condition and failure limits
Select samples packed by the normal production team using intended materials. Include configurations likely to challenge the pack, such as a long diffuser, heavy driver or easily marked finish. Record why they represent the range rather than assuming a compact fitting covers every design. Photograph each identified sample, its internal restraints and the closed pack.
Record existing marks and baseline operation, retaining an untransported comparison sample where useful. Agree what counts as failure: diffuser cracks or chips, displaced components, damaged wiring, finish abrasion and changed operation. Define cosmetic acceptance using photographs, viewing conditions and agreed visible surfaces. Do not let the factory decide acceptable damage after seeing the results.
Inspect damage before disturbing the evidence
After the agreed trial sequence, photograph cartons and cushioning before removing the fitting. Record crushing, punctures, shifted inserts and contact marks against the sample identity. Inspect diffuser edges, clips and fixing points for cracks, chips, crazing or release from their seats. Check whether cushioning loads the diffuser instead of supporting the intended structural parts.
Have a suitable technician inspect driver brackets, boards, connectors, wiring and loose accessories before repositioning anything. Look for migration, loosened fixings, pinched insulation and contact with sharp edges. Inspect painted, plated and optical surfaces for rubbing, film transfer and scratches under the agreed viewing conditions. An intact carton is not sufficient evidence of an undamaged luminaire.
Check operation after transport safely
Keep cracked fittings, loose internal parts and suspected wiring damage unpowered pending technical assessment. Have a competent technician complete an appropriate electrical safety assessment before functional testing. For equipment within the Great Britain electrical safety rules, importers must ensure that storage and transport under their responsibility do not jeopardise conformity with essential health and safety requirements.
Repeat the baseline functional checks under comparable supply and operating conditions. Check starting, stable illumination, flicker, dimming and controls where fitted, plus unusual noise or intermittent operation. Compare measured output and electrical readings with the agreed specification where relevant. Record results by sample; lighting up alone does not establish that the fitting remains safe or meets its specification.

Close failures and control production packing
For each failure, distinguish inadequate cushioning, poor restraint, abrasion from contact materials and weaknesses in the fitting itself. Ask for a documented correction, then repeat the agreed representative trial sequence with fresh samples in the revised pack. A photograph of extra padding does not close the failure. Record the limits of laboratory evidence and use a monitored delivery trial where useful.
Release the approved pack with photographs, material specifications, packing instructions and the trial report. Include checks for restraint placement, accessory separation and surface protection in production inspection. Use the sample-to-production guide for the handoff. Require review when the diffuser, component mounting, pack materials or delivery route changes, and compare arrival defects with the qualification records.
Frequently asked questions
Is a carton drop test enough for LED lights?
Assess the delivery route first. Drops may reveal impact damage but miss vibration, stacking pressure or abrasion. Agree representative trials and inspect both the pack and the fitting afterwards.
What should I check for diffuser damage?
Check edges, clips and fixing points for cracks, chips, crazing and displacement. Photograph damage before dismantling, and check whether the pack transferred loads onto the diffuser.
Should LED lights be switched on after transport testing?
Yes, after inspection and an appropriate electrical safety assessment. Keep damaged or suspect fittings unpowered. Repeat baseline operation checks, including dimming and controls where fitted.
When should luminaire packaging be retested?
Review qualification when diffuser material, internal mounting, cushioning, carton construction or the delivery route changes. Investigate arrival damage and retest the corrected arrangement before release.
