Sourcing commercial lighting from China for the UK

For commercial lighting, start with the installed specification and the exact tested model. A cheaper fitting is not an alternative if its driver, photometry, safety file or replacement plan fails the buyer's requirement.

A buyer's checklist for commercial luminaires: specify the fitting, verify the tested configuration and compare delivered support as well as price.

The trade number is a lead, not a quotation

In 2025 the UK imported £848m of lighting fittings and parts from China under HS4 9405, about 58% of its imports in that family. HMRC groups many fittings and parts here; the figure does not tell you what a particular LED luminaire costs, whether it is suitable for a UK project or whether direct import beats a UK distributor. The category comparison explains the method.

Start with a repeatable line or a defined project schedule, not a catalogue photograph. A small replacement order with an urgent installation date may be better bought from UK stock once lead time, warranty handling and site access are priced.

Specify the installed result

Give the factory the mounting method, dimensions and cut-out, input voltage, location, ingress protection where needed, dimming/control protocol, light output, colour temperature, colour rendering, beam and glare requirements, expected operating hours and warranty terms. Ask for a photometric file for the exact variant and have the project designer verify it; a wattage and a lumen claim alone do not show what the space will look like.

Name the LED module and driver, whether the driver can be replaced, who stocks replacements and whether a changed driver requires your approval. For an emergency fitting, require the emergency function, duration and test arrangement to be specified separately. The product specification guide turns this into an acceptance schedule.

Fields to agree for a commercial luminaire enquiry; acceptance limits belong to the project specification.

Match compliance evidence to the shipped configuration

For an electrical luminaire placed on the Great Britain market, check the applicable electrical safety, electromagnetic compatibility and RoHS requirements against the complete configuration, including driver and controls. Obtain the declaration, technical documentation and test reports for that configuration; check model identifiers and the issuing laboratory rather than accepting a generic certificate image. Great Britain accepts CE or UKCA marking under the applicable rules, but the mark does not replace the underlying evidence.

The importer must also check its own labelling and traceability duties. Waste electrical equipment producer obligations can apply to the first UK placer; lighting-specific ecodesign and energy labelling rules depend on whether the item is a light source, control gear or containing product. A project in Northern Ireland needs its own market check. Use the electronics guide and UK compliance finder to scope the regime before ordering.

Compare a sample and a delivered offer

Approve one production-representative sample with the final driver, controls, housing and labels. Test function, light output and the agreed installation details, then agree what an inspection will sample from production. A beautiful prototype with another driver does not qualify the ordered model.

Compare the delivered cost at the same quantity and warranty period, including freight, duty, testing, spares and replacements. Send the schedule, drawings, target quantity, destination and required evidence with a sourcing enquiry. We can assess whether the scope fits before implying a saving.

Frequently asked questions

Does a CE or UKCA logo prove a commercial light is suitable?

No. Check the declaration and technical evidence against the exact model, driver and controls, then confirm its performance suits the installation.

Should the driver be part of the specification?

Yes. Name the driver and replacement route, and decide whether substitutions need buyer approval. A changed driver can affect performance and the scope of existing test evidence.

Is direct import always cheaper than a UK lighting distributor?

No. Compare the same installed specification, delivered quantity, warranty support, spares and lead time. Local stock can be the better answer for an urgent or small order.
