What is breakbulk shipping?

Breakbulk shipping carries non-containerised cargo as individually handled pieces or bundles, such as crated machinery or bundled steel. A UK buyer should establish how each piece will be protected, lifted, secured and unloaded throughout the journey. Cambridge China Bridge can coordinate these details with its staff in China.

What breakbulk means

Breakbulk cargo is loaded and handled as separate pieces or bundles rather than inside a shipping container. Examples include crated machines, fabricated structures and bundled steel. It differs from loose bulk cargo, such as grain poured into a ship’s hold.

Size alone does not determine the shipping method. Ask the forwarder to compare breakbulk with suitable container equipment and confirm how the cargo will actually travel. Use our guide to oversized and heavy imports when assessing transport options.

Describe each packed piece before booking

Give the forwarder a packing list showing each piece’s identifier, packed dimensions, gross weight and contents. Obtain drawings showing the centre of gravity, approved lifting points, support points and any restrictions on tilting or stacking. Confirm these details for the packed load, including its base and protective enclosure.

Ask the carrier or terminal to confirm acceptance against this information. Establish whether the booking includes intermediate transfers, exposed storage or carriage on deck. A quote based on an unpacked machine can become unsuitable once its crate and lifting arrangement are added.

Agree protection and handling together

Ask the factory and packing provider to propose packaging for the actual route and handling method. Establish how the base supports the load, where slings or forks can enter, and how handlers can secure it without pressing on panels, pipework or controls. Agree weather protection, corrosion protection and access for inspection.

Request photographs before the enclosure is closed and after packing is complete. Match the piece identifiers to the packing list and make handling instructions visible. For the detailed protection brief, use protecting heavy machinery during transport. Packing approval should follow confirmation that the intended handlers can use it.

Allocate handling and delivery responsibilities

Ask who arranges loading, terminal handling, securing aboard the vessel, discharge, onward transport and unloading at your premises. Get the quote to distinguish included work from separately charged crane hire, storage, repacking and waiting. Agree who receives condition photographs and who authorises changes if the cargo cannot be handled as planned.

For workplace lifting in Great Britain, lifting operations involving lifting equipment must be properly planned by a competent person, appropriately supervised and carried out safely. Establish who plans your receiving lift and give them the packed-load information. Use our delivery preparation guide to check site access, unloading arrangements and the receiving location.

Release cargo against a shared handling pack

Before dispatch, bring together the accepted packing list, drawings, packing photographs, handling instructions and named contacts. Ask the factory, forwarder and receiving contractor to confirm that they are working from the same information. Resolve differences in weights, lifting points or packing descriptions before the cargo leaves.

At arrival, photograph the cargo and its packaging before unpacking where safe to do so. Record visible damage or missing pieces with the receiving party and notify the forwarder and insurer promptly. Keep damaged packaging and handling records while seeking instructions about inspection or repair.

Frequently asked questions

Is breakbulk the same as bulk shipping?

No. Breakbulk consists of individually handled pieces or bundles. Loose bulk cargo, such as grain, is handled as an unpackaged mass.

Does oversized cargo have to ship as breakbulk?

Not necessarily. Ask a forwarder to compare suitable container equipment with breakbulk using the packed dimensions, weight and handling restrictions.

Does breakbulk machinery need a crate?

Agree protection for the route and handling method. A crate may suit some machinery; other loads need a designed base and protective covering. Confirm that the packaging allows safe lifting and securing.

Who unloads breakbulk cargo at my premises?

Agree this before booking. Name the receiving contractor, confirm the unloading equipment and site access, and establish whether unloading is included in the transport quote.
