How to protect heavy machinery during transport

Agree a machine-specific packing plan before dispatch: immobilise moving parts, confirm the packed centre of gravity, specify corrosion protection and obtain a restraint-removal sequence. Check arrival damage and support the machine before releasing restraints. Share this plan with Cambridge China Bridge.

A heavy-duty truck and low loader for transporting heavy loads.

Agree a transport pack before dispatch

Ask the manufacturer for a packing drawing and written instructions covering the machine, detached assemblies, base, restraints and protective wrapping. Name who approves packing, who checks it at the factory and who receives the instructions at your site. Include unloading, unpacking and any storage before installation.

Our machinery sourcing guide covers supply documentation and performance checks. This transport pack should identify the actual shipping configuration and explain how to move it without damage. Request photographs before wrapping hides the restraints, then add the packing checks to your pre-shipment inspection.

Immobilise parts without damaging the machine

Ask the manufacturer to identify everything that could slide, rotate, swing or drop: travelling tables, heads, arms, counterweights and detached accessories. Obtain its specified transport positions and purpose-made locks, braces or supports. Ask it to confirm that the chosen restraint method avoids loading bearings, precision guides, covers or guards beyond their intended use.

Keep internal movement restraints distinct from the securing that holds the machine to its base and the shipment to the vehicle or container. Give each removable restraint a label matching a photograph and removal instruction. Record hidden locks too. Do not assume a brake, drive motor or hydraulic pressure will hold a moving assembly throughout transport.

Give the lifting team usable weight and balance information

Obtain the weight and centre-of-gravity position for the actual packed machine and each separately handled assembly. Request a drawing with reference faces, orientation, lifting points, permitted handling methods and any restrictions. Ask whether removing accessories or packaging changes the balance. Mark the package to match the drawing rather than guessing from its outside shape.

Send this information to the unloading contractor before booking delivery, including the base design and access to lifting points. HSE guidance says lifting equipment must have adequate strength for its proposed use. Have the lifting team confirm its handling plan against the supplied information; a centre-of-gravity mark alone does not establish that a lift is safe.

Specify corrosion protection for the whole journey

List vulnerable surfaces, including bare machined faces, guides, shafts, electrical enclosures and detached tooling. Ask the manufacturer to specify compatible protective coatings, barrier wrapping and moisture control for the route and expected storage conditions. Have it explain surface preparation, how closures are sealed and what happens if the wrapping is opened during the journey.

Agree how protection will be checked on arrival and maintained during storage. Request the coating name, safe removal method and compatibility with seals, lubricants and electrical components. Keep moisture-control materials clear of moving parts and identify everything to remove. Avoid sealing visibly wet machinery inside wrapping; ask the factory to confirm it is dry before closure.

Check before releasing transit restraints

Photograph the unopened package, then inspect for shifted loads, broken supports, wet wrapping, corrosion and loose restraints. Compare the condition with dispatch photographs. Before releasing anything, confirm the machine is stable on the intended support, identify stored energy and support assemblies that could move when unlocked. Follow the manufacturer's sequence with suitably competent people. Stop if a restraint is distorted, loaded unexpectedly or missing from the instructions.

Reconcile every removed restraint against the list, inspect previously hidden surfaces and refit any guards removed for transport. Do not energise the machine merely to discover whether a lock remains fitted. Where safety depends on installation, UK workplace rules require inspection after installation and before use. Agree that handover alongside the installation and commissioning plan, with damage and unresolved checks recorded.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use the machine brake as a transport lock?

Ask the manufacturer for its specified transport restraint. Do not assume a brake or hydraulic pressure can replace a mechanical lock or support during shipment.

What centre-of-gravity information should I request?

Request the position on a drawing for the actual packed configuration, with weight, orientation, reference faces, lifting points and handling restrictions. Ask what changes when assemblies are detached.

Is plastic wrapping enough to prevent machinery rust?

Agree protection for the surfaces, route and storage conditions. Ask for compatible coatings, sealed barrier wrapping and moisture control, plus instructions for checking and removing them.

When should transit restraints be removed?

Follow the manufacturer's sequence once the machine is stable and affected assemblies are supported. Check damage and stored energy first, then reconcile removed restraints before commissioning.
