China to UK shipping disruptions: check your route
Before accepting a changed China to UK shipping route, match the proposed sailing to the carrier’s schedule, obtain written insurance confirmation and compare revised door-to-door costs. Treat Arctic or Suez speed claims as unverified until they match your shipment. Ask Cambridge China Bridge to coordinate these checks.

Get a shipment-specific route proposal
Ask your forwarder for the carrier, service name, loading and discharge ports, vessel and voyage, transhipment points, proposed departure and arrival, and booking status. Require the proposed corridor to be stated explicitly: Suez, Cape of Good Hope or Arctic. Save the dated proposal alongside the original booking.
A route announcement or advertised transit time does not establish availability for your cargo. Ask whether the proposal is a bookable service, a provisional plan or a trial sailing. Our China to UK shipping guide covers the baseline modes and charges; this check establishes what is actually being offered.
Match the offer to the carrier’s schedule
Open the carrier’s own schedule and disruption notices. Match the ports, service, vessel and voyage to the forwarder’s proposal. Check the notice’s publication date and which sailings it covers. If the schedule and proposal disagree, request a corrected booking confirmation before authorising cargo movement.
Ask for the cargo acceptance deadline, confirmed space, onward connection and destination delivery plan. Separate port arrival from warehouse availability. Recheck before dispatch from the factory and after any route change, recording who checked and when. Use our lead-time planning guide to rebuild the wider order plan.
Challenge Arctic and Suez alternatives
For an Arctic proposal, ask for the actual sailing window, named vessel, cargo acceptance, onward UK connection and fallback if the sailing cannot proceed. Ask how cold exposure, handling and any temperature-sensitive goods will be managed. Do not transfer a headline speed claim to your order without a shipment-specific schedule.
For Suez or Cape routing, ask whether the named voyage uses that corridor and what happens if the carrier diverts it. Request revised arrival estimates, connection arrangements and charges in writing. Compare alternatives between the same collection and delivery points, with the same cargo and service scope.
Confirm insurance for the revised journey
Send the proposed route, vessel, transhipments and storage arrangements to your cargo insurer or broker. Ask for written confirmation of cover for that journey, including any route restrictions, war or strikes exclusions, additional premium, notification conditions and amendments needed before departure.
Ask specifically whether delay, temperature damage, extra storage and diversion-related costs are covered or excluded. Keep the policy wording and any endorsement with the shipment file. Do not assume that a freight quote saying “insured” answers these questions. Our general average guide explains another insurance issue to discuss.
Reprice and approve the complete delivery
Request a revised quote showing freight, route surcharges, insurance, transhipment, handling, storage, clearance and final delivery, with exclusions and quote validity stated. Ask who bears cancellation, diversion and missed-connection costs. Compare the result using our landed-price guide, including the cash tied up while stock is delayed.
Under HMRC’s transaction-value guidance, transport, insurance, loading and handling connected with delivery to the UK border must be included in customs value. Give your customs agent the revised charges to check their treatment rather than carrying forward the original freight figure.
Approve the route only when the booking evidence, insurance response and revised cost comparison agree. If an item remains unconfirmed, record it and decide whether to hold dispatch or accept that specific uncertainty. Cambridge China Bridge’s staff in China can coordinate factory readiness with the forwarder’s revised collection plan.
