Can a pallet be delivered home without a forklift?

Yes, if the carrier accepts your home address and packed pallet, confirms a suitable tail lift, and agrees a safe unloading point. Kerbside delivery does not promise movement into your garage. Arrange the equipment and people for the remaining route before booking. Discuss the packing and delivery brief with Cambridge China Bridge.

Confirm the tail lift against the finished pallet

Tell the carrier explicitly that this is a residential delivery with no forklift. Request written confirmation of a tail-lift vehicle and a pallet truck, who operates them, and whether that service is included in the quotation. A tail lift lowers goods from the vehicle; it does not settle how they reach storage.

Supply the finished pallet’s overall dimensions, gross weight including packaging, photographs and fork-entry details. Ask the carrier to confirm compatibility with the lift platform, its capacity and the pallet truck. Do not assume every pallet qualifies. Use our pallet preparation guide for the factory packing brief.

Agree exactly where kerbside delivery ends

Ask the carrier to define kerbside delivery for your address. Mark the proposed drop point on a photograph and ask whether the driver will move the pallet across the boundary or only leave it beside the vehicle. Confirm what happens if parked cars or unsuitable ground prevent access to that point.

Do not assume the booking includes crossing a raised kerb, moving along a driveway, entering a garage, unpacking or removing the empty pallet. Request any extra handling explicitly. If you are still choosing the road service, see part-load or full-truck delivery; neither label settles the unloading scope.

Check the lorry approach and unloading space

Send photographs of the street, approach, entrance and proposed stopping place. Describe narrow bends, parked cars, gates, overhead obstructions, access restrictions and turning space. Ask for the proposed vehicle’s dimensions and the space needed behind it to deploy the lift and manoeuvre the pallet. A postcode check alone cannot show these details.

HSE guidance recommends level loading and unloading areas. Choose a firm unloading surface and ask the carrier to approve it from your site details. Plan how to keep children, pets and other people away from the operation. Do not rely on the driver finding a different stopping place after arrival.

Plan the complete route into storage

Walk the route from the agreed drop point to the storage position. Check gravel, grass, damaged paving, slopes, drains, steps and door thresholds. Measure openings and turning space against both the loaded pallet and the handling equipment. HSE notes that soft or uneven surfaces can increase the force needed to move a load. Hiring a pallet truck alone does not resolve those obstacles.

Choose equipment suited to the load and route, and arrange people who can use it safely. If moving the whole pallet is unsuitable, consider unpacking at a stable, sheltered location and moving manageable cartons with suitable aids. Check carton weights and handling needs beforehand. Do not try to catch a rolling pallet or improvise a ramp when delivery arrives.

Book only when the handoff is workable

Keep the accepted load details, vehicle and equipment confirmation, marked drop-point photograph, receiving contact and storage plan together. Confirm the delivery appointment process and the terms for waiting, failed delivery and redelivery. Arrange someone to receive the goods and somewhere dry and secure to put them immediately.

If access or onward movement remains unresolved, quote delivery to a suitable warehouse with onward carton delivery, or reduce the order before dispatch. Our guide to importing without a warehouse explains the wider alternatives. Cambridge China Bridge has its own staff in China; share the home-delivery constraints before factory packing is agreed.

Frequently asked questions

Can I receive a pallet without a forklift?

Yes, if the carrier confirms a suitable tail lift and handling equipment for your packed load and address. You also need a workable plan to move the goods from the agreed drop point into storage.

Will the driver put the pallet in my garage?

Only rely on this if the carrier agrees it explicitly. Send photographs of the driveway, entrance and threshold, and confirm the handling scope in writing before booking.

Can a pallet truck move over gravel?

Do not assume it can handle your loaded pallet on gravel. Send surface photographs and load details to the equipment provider. Arrange another handling method or delivery location if suitability is unconfirmed.

What if the delivery lorry cannot reach my house?

Agree the fallback before booking, including who authorises another location and how waiting or redelivery is charged. If access remains uncertain, arrange a suitable receiving warehouse.
