Live container unloading or drop and collect?
Book live unloading when your site, team and equipment can empty the container within the haulier's agreed waiting allowance. Choose drop and collect when you need more unloading time and can accommodate and safeguard the agreed container or trailer arrangement. Share the cargo and receiving-site brief with Cambridge China Bridge.

Confirm what the delivery arrangement means
Live unloading means your team unloads while the driver waits. Drop and collect means the haulier leaves the agreed unit and returns to collect it. Ask whether that unit is a container on a trailer or a container placed on the ground. These need different access and equipment; do not assume a standard container vehicle can lower the box.
Ask the haulier to approve the proposed arrangement for your address and cargo before booking. Use our container delivery and handoffs guide for the wider movement plan; this decision concerns what your receiving site can actually accommodate.
Check access for delivery and collection
Send photographs and a site plan showing the approach, entrance, turning space, overhead obstructions, unloading position and exit. Ask the haulier to confirm the vehicle configuration and any space needed for lifting equipment. Include ground conditions and slopes in the brief rather than relying on the address alone.
For drop and collect, reserve the space until collection and keep the collection route accessible. Check that parked vehicles, waste skips or later deliveries will not block it. Ask who can approve a different position if the driver finds the intended spot unsuitable.
Match unloading capacity to the actual load
Obtain carton and pallet details, weights, loading photographs and the unloading sequence. Loose cartons, mixed products and crates may need different people, handling methods and receiving space. Use the China container loading check guide to request useful loading evidence before dispatch.
For live unloading, compare the team's realistic unloading plan with the written waiting allowance, including checking, sorting and moving goods away from the doors. For drop and collect, confirm equipment and operators will remain available until the work is finished. Check forklift suitability, access height and any ramp or dock interface with the equipment provider.
HSE guidance says to apply vehicle or trailer brakes and use all stabilisers during loading and unloading. Ask the haulier and site supervisor to agree how this will be managed for the proposed arrangement, including a trailer left without its tractor.
Agree custody while the unit stays on site
Before accepting drop and collect, ask who is responsible under the booking terms for the container, trailer and goods while they remain at your premises. Confirm security arrangements, authorised access and insurance cover with the relevant providers. Do not assume cargo insurance also covers damage to a borrowed container or trailer.
Agree a handover record showing identifiers, seal condition, visible damage and the accepted parking position. Name the person who reports damage or an unloading problem. Confirm whether moving the unit is permitted and who may do it; photograph its condition again when it is ready for collection.

Compare written terms before choosing
Request written terms for the unloading allowance, when waiting starts, how extra waiting is charged, failed delivery, cancellation and equipment provision. For drop and collect, add collection booking, notice that unloading is complete, delayed collection, container and trailer charges, and any cleaning or damage charges. Ask which charges continue after you report the unit ready.
Compare the complete arrangements rather than the outbound haulage line alone. Separate haulier waiting and trailer hire from shipping-line container charges, and confirm whose terms govern each. Our China to UK shipping guide explains the wider freight and free-time cost picture.
Choose live unloading if the access, load and unloading plan fit the agreed allowance. Choose drop and collect if the site can support the unattended arrangement and the extra custody and collection terms are acceptable. If neither works, ask about unloading at a depot and onward delivery before committing.
Frequently asked questions
Is live container unloading cheaper than drop and collect?
Compare the full written quotes. Live unloading can incur waiting or failed-delivery charges; drop and collect can add collection, trailer hire and container charges. The unloading plan determines which exposure you can manage.
Does drop and collect put the container on the ground?
Ask explicitly. The haulier may leave a container on a trailer, or quote a separate arrangement to place it on the ground. Confirm the delivery equipment and unloading height before booking.
Can I unload a container without a forklift?
Possibly, depending on the goods and an agreed safe handling method. Send carton weights, dimensions and loading details to the receiving team. Do not book on the assumption that the driver supplies equipment or labour.
Who pays if a dropped container is damaged?
Check the booking terms and insurance before accepting delivery. Ask who covers the container, trailer and goods during site custody, how damage is reported and what handover evidence is needed.
