What is a container freight station or CFS?
A container freight station, or CFS, is a cargo handling facility where shipments are combined into containers or separated after arrival. For LCL cargo, it connects factory transport with the shared container journey and destination collection. Cambridge China Bridge helps buyers coordinate factory dispatch with their freight arrangements.

What the facility actually does
A CFS handles goods moving into or out of containers. It can be at a port or inland. For less-than-container-load shipping, or LCL, consolidation means combining separate consignments in a shared container; deconsolidation means unloading that container and separating the consignments at destination.
A container yard mainly handles containers as complete units. A CFS handles the cargo inside them. The destination CFS may be an unpacking depot away from the arrival port, so ask for its name and address before assuming where your goods will be collected.
The origin handoff: factory to shared container
The factory or its haulier delivers packed cargo to the nominated origin CFS. The consolidator combines it with other consignments for shipping. Before dispatch, confirm the receiving address, booking reference, cargo acceptance deadline and whether the booking expects loose cartons or pallets.
Ask for a receipt showing the packages received, their condition and any differences from the packing list. Agree who resolves missing cartons, damaged packaging or changed dimensions before loading. CFS receipt is a transport handoff, not acceptance of product quality; arrange factory inspection separately.
The destination handoff: container to your consignment
After arrival, the shared container goes to the nominated destination CFS for unpacking and separation. Vessel arrival, completed unpacking and cargo availability are different milestones. Ask the forwarder for confirmation that your consignment has been identified and counted, rather than booking transport from the vessel arrival notice alone.
Ask who operates the depot, who issues the collection authority and who handles discrepancies. Request an unpacking discrepancy report and photographs if packages are missing or damaged. Keep factory dispatch records and origin receipts so you can compare what entered the transport chain with what arrived.
Release and collection are separate checks
Where the depot holds your goods in customs temporary storage, its operator may only allow removal with evidence that customs have authorised release. Physical unpacking does not establish that release. Ask your forwarder to confirm customs status alongside the depot's confirmation that the cargo is ready.
Before sending a vehicle, also confirm any outstanding freight or handling payments, the collection reference and the depot's booking arrangements. Use our UK LCL depot-collection guide for the collection process and vehicle checks.

Make the CFS scope visible in your quote
Ask the forwarder to identify origin receiving and consolidation, destination unpacking, handling, storage and onward transport separately. Confirm which are included, which are payable locally and what triggers extra charges. If a quote says CFS to CFS, ask explicitly whether factory pickup and delivery to your premises are included.
Use our freight-forwarder quote comparison guide to compare the same service boundaries. Our sea versus air freight guide covers the wider transport decision. With staff in China, Cambridge China Bridge can help align factory packing and dispatch information with the forwarder's receiving instructions.
Frequently asked questions
What does CFS mean in shipping?
CFS means container freight station: a facility where cargo is loaded into or unloaded from containers, including combining and separating LCL consignments.
Is a CFS the same as the arrival port?
It may be at the port or inland. Ask for the nominated destination depot's address before arranging collection.
Can I collect LCL cargo when the ship arrives?
Do not book from arrival alone. Confirm unpacking, cargo availability, customs release where applicable and the depot's collection authority.
Does CFS to CFS include delivery to my warehouse?
Do not assume it does. Ask whether factory pickup, destination handling and onward delivery are included, and who invoices any excluded services.
