Packing ceramic tableware for mixed sea shipments

Approve the complete packing arrangement, not just the outer carton. Separate ceramic surfaces, test filled cartons under the intended stack, and keep fragile packs out of heavy load paths. Send a representative trial by sea and map arrival damage back to each pack and pallet position. Agree the packing brief with Cambridge China Bridge.

Define the trial and packing brief

List each product code, shape, packed weight, carton contents and separator arrangement. Include awkward combinations such as plates beside handled mugs or bowls with loose lids. Prefer separate inner packs for different shapes; if they share an outer carton, approve the layout and prevent movement between compartments.

Use production ceramics and the intended packaging, consolidation route and handling arrangements for the trial. Photograph the approved pack before closing it and give the packing specification a revision reference. Use the distribution-route packaging guide for broader test planning.

Fit separators around vulnerable parts

Keep rims, handles, spouts and lids from contacting neighbouring pieces or carton walls. Use fitted dividers or shaped cushioning that stays in place during handling. Put cushioning between nested plates and bowls so the glaze cannot rub and the stack does not bear directly on vulnerable rims.

Ask the factory to show the closed pack being handled, then reopen it to check for displaced separators, rubbing and pieces settling together. Loose fill alone is a poor way to control a handle or lid. Record material, thickness, fit and packing sequence so the production line can reproduce the approved arrangement.

Check compression with filled cartons

Ask a packaging laboratory to assess filled cartons using the proposed stacking pattern, load above them and storage conditions, including humidity. A board description or an empty-carton result does not establish how the assembled pack will behave. Agree the test method and acceptance criteria before testing.

Inspect carton bulging, crushed corners, divider collapse and ceramic damage after the test. Check whether the carton carries the stack load or transfers it through the contents. If a carton fails, revise the board, internal supports or stacking arrangement, then test the revised pack before approving it.

Plan fragile-item pallet positions

Draw the pallet layout by carton type and packed weight. Keep heavy, robust cartons low and supported, with fragile cartons outside their load paths. Do not place a heavy carton over a weak pack just because it fits. Keep cartons within the pallet footprint and support them across deck gaps. Agree restraint that prevents movement without crushing cartons, and confirm whether anything may be stacked above the pallet.

Specify a pallet suitable for the actual load distribution and handling equipment. Any solid wood packaging used must meet the applicable requirements. Confirm this with the packing service or forwarder before dispatch. Use the container load restraint guide to review the wider loading arrangement.

Turn trial breakage into packing changes

Photograph the arriving pallet and unopened cartons before moving or unpacking them. Record carton identifiers, pallet positions, dents, moisture and displaced restraint. Follow the damaged-shipment arrival checklist for the immediate response. Open visibly damaged packs and apparently sound packs from different positions; record how many pieces were examined, broken, chipped or cracked for each product.

Compare arrival findings with dispatch photographs and pre-shipment condition records. Link each defect to its separator arrangement and stack position rather than relying on a shipment-wide average. Intact cartons with chipped rims suggest a different investigation from crushed bottom cartons. Agree corrective action, retain damaged pieces and packaging, and repeat the affected packing trial before scaling up. An undamaged trial does not guarantee future shipments.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pack mugs and plates in the same carton?

Yes, if each shape has a fitted compartment and the filled pack passes the agreed checks. Keep handles away from plates and carton walls; do not let heavier pieces load fragile parts.

Is a stronger outer carton enough for ceramics?

No. Separators, internal supports, moisture conditions and the stack above all matter. Check the complete filled pack for compression damage and movement.

Should fragile ceramic cartons go on top?

Keep them out of heavy load paths, but avoid an unstable top layer. Agree the pallet layout, restraint and any stacking above it with the consolidator.

What should I record after a ceramic trial shipment?

Record examined and damaged pieces by product, carton and pallet position. Photograph chips, cracks, separators and carton condition, then link each failure to a packing change and repeat the affected trial.
