How to run industrial battery take-back

As an industrial battery producer, assess returns against the replacement, chemistry and unavailable-producer conditions, then arrange free take-back where required. Publish return instructions and use an approved treatment operator or exporter. Coordinate factory chemistry records with Cambridge China Bridge.

Identify the producer and the battery category

For batteries imported from China, identify which UK business first makes them available on the UK market. That business is normally the producer. Start with the lithium batteries and battery packs guide for importing, marking and shipping.

Before applying this procedure, confirm the category using the battery classification guide. Keep the classification decision with the factory specification. This guide adds a return-handling process for industrial batteries; use it to plan operations in Great Britain.

Assess other brands and replacement conditions

GOV.UK says industrial producers must take back waste industrial batteries free of charge from end-users when supplying new batteries, when the waste batteries have the same chemistry as batteries they place on the market, or when they cannot be returned to another producer. Assess another brand against these conditions rather than rejecting it because its label differs.

Ask whether you are supplying new batteries, what chemistry the waste batteries contain, and why another producer cannot accept them. Record the answers and the applicable condition. Do not make buying a replacement a blanket requirement. If the request is unclear, seek clarification from the Office for Product Safety and Standards before refusing it.

Give customers usable return instructions

You must tell end-users how to return waste industrial batteries; GOV.UK gives website information as an example. Publish a contact route and explain what happens after a request. Ask for the brand, model, chemistry, photographs, quantity, location and visible damage so your operator can assess the return.

Confirm the receiving location, contact person and agreed transport arrangements in writing. Ask customers to contact you before dispatch, especially for damaged or unidentified batteries. Obtain handling and packaging instructions from the receiving operator rather than reusing the factory's instructions for shipping new batteries.

Check the approved recycling destination

Waste industrial batteries must go to an approved battery treatment operator or an approved battery exporter for treatment and recycling. Sending them to landfill or for incineration is illegal. A general scrap collection offer does not establish that the required destination has been arranged.

Before accepting the offer, check the destination's current approval in the official battery database linked from GOV.UK. Ask the operator to confirm acceptance of the chemistry and condition involved. If a collector acts as an intermediary, record the approved destination and obtain evidence of delivery there.

Keep a return file and factory chemistry records

Keep the customer's request, photographs, chemistry assessment, decision, agreed arrangements and receiving operator's acknowledgement together. Track an accepted return until receipt is confirmed. Record practical problems, such as missing labels or an operator declining a damaged pack, so staff can resolve them before another customer dispatches batteries.

Ask the China factory for chemistry information tied to the actual model and batch, and reconcile it with your product records. Use the battery weight and chemistry evidence guide for reporting preparation. Keep producer reporting records distinct from the file showing what happened to each waste return.

Frequently asked questions

Must I take back another brand's industrial battery?

Assess the replacement, chemistry and unavailable-producer conditions. Another brand's label alone is not a reason to reject a request that meets the take-back conditions.

Must the customer buy a replacement battery?

Do not impose that as a blanket condition. GOV.UK also lists matching chemistry and inability to return the waste battery to another producer as take-back conditions.

What if I cannot identify the battery chemistry?

Request label photographs, model details and available technical records. Ask the receiving operator to assess the information before agreeing packaging or dispatch.

Can I use a local scrap collector?

Check where the batteries will go. The required treatment and recycling destination is an approved battery treatment operator or approved battery exporter; obtain destination and receipt evidence.
