Is my battery portable, industrial or automotive?
Check the battery’s function and design before its weight: vehicle starting and lighting differ from electric propulsion. Assess sealing, weight and evidence of exclusive industrial use before choosing the responsibility route. Cambridge China Bridge can help gather factory evidence for your review.

Start with function and design
Automotive batteries provide vehicle engine starting, ignition or road-vehicle lighting power, regardless of weight. Electric-vehicle propulsion batteries are industrial. Industrial classification also covers exclusive industrial or professional design, unsealed batteries other than automotive batteries, and sealed batteries that are not portable. Professional installation alone does not make a battery industrial.
Check sealing and the weight boundary
The technical guidance says portable batteries are sealed, under 4 kilograms and neither automotive nor industrial. Its newer linked classification guidance says 4kg or below, with no exclusive industrial or professional design. At exactly that boundary, flag the wording difference and confirm the classification with the relevant regulator. A safety gas-release valve does not automatically make a battery unsealed.
Test the claim of exclusive industrial use
The newer guidance says public availability and general-use descriptions weigh against exclusive industrial design. A manufacturer’s industrial-use letter alone is insufficient. Ask for the exact model’s data sheet, design explanation, intended equipment, connector drawings and sales literature. Compare these with how you will advertise it; resolve contradictory claims before ordering.
Keep a model-specific decision file
Record the model, photographs, battery or complete-pack weight, sealing evidence, intended function and classification reasoning. Ask the factory to explain which design features support its claim. Keep the manufacturer’s statement beside supporting documents rather than treating it as approval. Review the file when the design or advertised uses change. Our solar and battery sourcing guide covers installation and supplier checks.

Choose the route after classification
Registration depends on battery type and the amount placed on the market. Use the classification file alongside your expected supply volumes, then follow our battery registration checks and reporting and take-back guide. For a unique or custom-made battery, the technical guidance advises contacting the environmental regulators before placing it on the market.
Frequently asked questions
Is an electric car battery automotive?
A battery providing propulsion power is industrial. A separate battery for engine starting, ignition or road-vehicle lighting is automotive.
Does professional installation make a battery industrial?
No. The technical guidance says installation or removal by a professional does not itself make the battery industrial.
Can a battery weighing exactly 4kg be portable?
The newer linked guidance includes 4kg or below if the other criteria are met. The technical page says under 4 kilograms. Flag this difference and confirm the boundary case with the regulator.
Is a factory’s industrial battery letter enough?
No. The newer classification guidance requires supporting evidence beyond written confirmation. Ask for documents tied to the exact model and its exclusive industrial or professional design.
