Launch an own-brand battery-powered product
Launch with a selected battery configuration whose sample, components and test evidence match. Freeze it in the order and keep a shared product register that separates reportable electrical-equipment weight from battery weight. Cambridge China Bridge can coordinate factory checks through its own staff in China.

Choose the configuration you can evidence
Ask the factory for a comparison of the battery options: chemistry, cell maker and model, pack construction, protection circuit, charging arrangement, weight and replacement method. Compare actual samples for your intended use, including charging, handling and repeat operation. Prefer the configuration you can substantiate and control over an attractive capacity claim.
Map each report to the exact sample and component list. Ask the issuing laboratory to clarify any differences or claimed coverage of alternative batteries. Leave unresolved options out of the launch. Our certification guide explains what markings and reports establish; use it alongside this configuration decision.
Freeze the order and marketplace listing
Give the approved configuration a distinct product reference and revision. Attach the component list, photographs, approved sample reference, charging accessories, instructions and evidence references to the order. State that battery, protection-circuit and charger substitutions need written approval. Use our product specification guide for the wider specification.
Make the marketplace listing describe that configuration, including whether batteries and a charger are supplied. Substantiate runtime and charging claims through recorded trials. Before dispatch, ask the inspector to compare production components and packaging against the approved record. Hold a changed configuration until its evidence and listing have been reviewed.
Check scope and reporting responsibility
Use the official EEE guidance to check whether the finished product is covered and select its reporting category. A small physical size is not a category decision. For products containing batteries, report the EEE weight minus battery weight; the relevant producer reports battery weight separately under the waste battery rules.
A UK business that first makes batteries available for supply or sale in its selling chain, including an importer, is a battery producer. Battery registration depends on battery type and the amount placed on the market. Confirm your route before launch using our battery producer guide, and use our WEEE guide for the separate electrical-equipment route.
Build a shared register with separate outputs
Use the register as a practical control, with a row for each approved configuration and links to its evidence. Record measured weights and the weighing method rather than copying a shipping weight. Agree the reportable equipment boundary with your scheme or regulator where accessories create uncertainty.
Produce separate outputs from the same configuration records: reportable equipment weight multiplied by the relevant units, and battery weight multiplied by the relevant units, grouped by battery chemistry. Battery producers must accurately record tonnage and chemistry. Keep supplied spare batteries identifiable so they are not lost in the equipment calculation.
| Field group | What to record |
|---|---|
| Configuration identity | Brand, product reference, revision, batch and marketplace listing reference |
| Evidence | Approved sample, component list, report scope and change approvals |
| Equipment output | Reporting category, reportable equipment weight excluding batteries and measurement evidence |
| Battery output | Battery model, chemistry, type, quantity supplied and battery weight |
| Market activity | Units, market destination, relevant dates and supporting transaction documents |
| Reporting control | Responsible legal entity, reporting route, reviewer and submitted-data reference |
Reconcile records before releasing the totals
Do not automatically report marketplace orders as your placed-on-market data. Official EEE guidance allows sales data only where it is broadly equivalent to the equipment tonnage placed on the market. Keep an explanation of that equivalence rather than assuming the marketplace dashboard is sufficient.
Reconcile your register with stock movements and transaction documents. Flag bundles, replacement batteries, changed configurations and overseas destinations for review before calculating totals. Assign a reviewer to each output and preserve the submitted version. Cambridge China Bridge can help obtain component identities, sample photographs and weighing records from the factory; keep reporting ownership explicit in your business.
Frequently asked questions
Can I launch all the factory's battery options?
Launch only options whose samples, components and evidence you have checked. Give each approved configuration a distinct reference and review its listing and weight records separately.
Does WEEE reporting include the battery weight?
No. For products containing batteries, report the EEE weight minus battery weight. The relevant producer reports the battery weight separately under the waste battery rules.
Can I use the factory's shipping weight?
Use measured configuration weights with a recorded measurement boundary. Shipping weight mixes the product with packaging and can hide differences between battery options.
Can I use marketplace sales totals for WEEE?
Only where sales data is broadly equivalent to the EEE tonnage placed on the market. Keep a record explaining that equivalence and reconcile it with your configuration register.
