Amazon UK trial batch: fulfil yourself or use FBA?
Fulfil the trial yourself if you can reliably pack, dispatch and handle returns while learning from the stock. Use FBA if its current total cost justifies handing customer fulfilment to Amazon. You can send only part of the batch and retain a reserve. Coordinate factory packing with Cambridge China Bridge.

Choose around your actual dispatch capacity
Self-fulfilment suits a trial when you have space, a dependable carrier collection and someone available to handle orders and returns. Time a complete dispatch using the finished product: find it, check it, pack it, print the label and hand it over. Include interruptions and cover for absences when judging whether you can sustain the work.
With FBA, Amazon handles storage, customer-order packing, shipping, customer support and returns. Choose it when that arrangement fits your available time and cost comparison. Keep product and listing checks separate from this decision; our Amazon UK selling guide covers those preparations.
Compare current fees using the same assumptions
Open Amazon UK’s current pricing page, downloadable rate card and Revenue Calculator. Select the UK store and compare the same product, selling price and packed dimensions under Amazon fulfilment and your own fulfilment. Amazon charges a referral fee on each sale, so self-fulfilment does not remove that cost. Save the estimate and its date before approving the route.
Check selling-plan charges, referral fees, fulfilment charges, storage, applicable surcharges, returns processing and removal or disposal costs. Check which amounts include VAT. Add your own carrier quote, packing materials, labour, storage and returns allowance. For FBA, add preparation and transport into Amazon. Compare the whole trial as well as each sale, including slow sales and leftover stock; do not count your time as free.
Separate factory preparation from order packing
For self-fulfilment, prepare a packing station and an agreed parcel format before opening sales. Ask the factory for photographs, packed dimensions and weights, then test the finished parcel through your intended carrier. Our e-commerce sourcing guide covers parcel design and damage prevention.
For FBA, agree who prepares the sellable units, checks labels, packs shipping cartons and books transport. Use the shipment instructions shown in your account to brief the factory or receiving warehouse. Approve a finished packing sample and retain photographs. Our barcode sticker placement guide covers label positioning. Include any UK correction work in the comparison. For bagged units, see our FBA plastic bag sample checks.
Plan delivery promises and returns together
For self-fulfilment, set handling and transit assumptions around actual packing capacity, carrier collections, weekends and absence cover. Amazon says to confirm shipment within your stated handling time. Check the customer-facing delivery promise before launch and compare it with actual deliveries. For FBA, check receiving progress and whether the offer is available before planning launch activity.
For self-fulfilment, assign someone to review return requests, arrange labels, receive parcels, inspect goods and record refunds. Check the current Amazon returns policy and your account settings before launch. FBA handles customer returns, but keep reviewing reasons, charges and stock outcomes. Feed recurring faults back into the factory specification and keep suspect goods separate from stock you intend to sell.

Send part of the batch and review before replenishing
You can send only part of the batch to Amazon and retain the rest: Amazon states that FBA has no minimum inventory requirement. Choose the initial allocation around your demand assumptions, replenishment arrangements and cash available for the trial. Keep a location record separating stock held locally, sent to Amazon, received, sold and returned.
Retain stock for replenishment or self-fulfilled orders, with separate quantities for each route so you do not promise the same goods twice. Set a review point based on sales, packing time, delivery performance, returns and actual charges. Agree an exit route before sending more; our unsold Amazon trial stock guide helps. Cambridge China Bridge’s own staff in China can coordinate the factory packing brief and evidence.
Frequently asked questions
Is FBA cheaper than posting orders myself?
Compare the same product and price in Amazon’s current calculator, then add preparation, inbound transport and leftover-stock costs. Compare that with your carrier, materials, labour, storage and returns costs.
Can I send only part of my trial batch to Amazon?
Yes. Amazon states that FBA has no minimum inventory requirement. Retain a reserve and track local, in-transit and received stock separately before replenishing.
Does FBA mean my factory does no packing work?
Agree factory preparation separately from Amazon’s customer-order packing. Check the shipment instructions, approve labels and cartons, and identify who pays for preparation or correction.
Who handles returns if I fulfil Amazon orders myself?
Assign someone to manage requests, labels, receipt, inspection and refunds using the current Amazon policy and account settings. With FBA, Amazon handles customer support and returns.
