Sourcing industrial gate valves from China

Industrial gate valves from China carry 2% UK duty across the ordinary steel and other-material lines supplied. For Great Britain, check pressure-equipment classification before agreeing conformity assessment and marking; a valve's duty code does not settle its safety obligations. Cambridge China Bridge sources industrial gate valves.

Gate-valve duty and material classification

Heading 8481 covers taps, cocks, valves and similar appliances for pipes, tanks and related equipment. For ordinary industrial gate valves, the supplied lines distinguish steel valves from valves of other materials. The table separates material variants sharing the same commodity code.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, both ordinary gate-valve codes carried 2% duty for goods from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or import control. A separate refrigerant reversing-valve line has a suspension and supplementary-unit entry; those details do not describe ordinary industrial isolation gate valves.

Confirm the commodity code against the valve's material, construction and function before ordering. For related products within the wider heading, see industrial ball valves.

Specify the gate, seat and pipe connection

State the fluid, operating temperature, maximum allowable pressure, bore and installation position. Specify body, wedge, stem and seat materials separately, including the exact grades and whether the seat is resilient or metal. Agree rising or non-rising stem construction, bonnet design, handwheel clearance and replacement packing.

Put flange drilling, sealing-face form, face-to-face length or the complete threaded-end specification on an approved drawing. Agree shell and seat leakage tests, test medium, acceptance criteria and records tied to the delivered batch. Ask for material records that connect the body and trim to the supplied valves.

For Great Britain, pressure-equipment rules cover equipment with maximum allowable pressure above 0.5 bar, subject to exclusions. Establish classification before selecting the conformity route. Where marking applies, CE or UKCA can be used. Equipment below the relevant classification limits instead needs sound engineering practice and adequate instructions; it must not carry a conformity marking unless other applicable legislation requires it.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 40 steel industrial gate valves under 8481 80 63 90, invoiced at £8,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,200. Duty at 2% is £184. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,384, so it is £1,876.80. Import taxes total £2,060.80; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £184 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Materials: match body and trim records to valve identification; check for undocumented substitutions, casting defects, corrosion and damaged coatings.

Connections: measure flange drilling, sealing faces, bore and face-to-face length against the approved drawing; check threaded ends with the agreed gauges.

Operation and leakage: check full gate travel, stem alignment and handwheel movement; review shell and seat test records and witness the agreed repeat tests.

Documents and labels: for valves subject to pressure-equipment requirements, verify the applicable conformity assessment and importer identification. Check English instructions, model identification and pressure information against the supplied valve. Plan the quality inspection around these checks.

What goes wrong

A valve can fit the nominal pipe size yet fail to match the flange drilling or face-to-face length. Substituted seat materials can change fluid compatibility, while poor wedge alignment, damaged seats or loose packing can cause leakage. Resolve these points against drawings and test records before accepting the batch.

A marking alone does not establish that the conformity assessment covers the ordered construction and intended service. Importers must check the manufacturer's required assessment. For valves intended for mains-water installations in England and Wales, confirm with the relevant water authority which quality, standard and suitability requirements apply. Make the intended application part of the specification.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on industrial gate valves from China?

The supplied ordinary steel and other-material gate-valve lines carry 2% duty, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty. The snapshot was read on 29 September 2026.

Do industrial gate valves need CE or UKCA marking?

Check pressure-equipment classification first. Where conformity marking applies in Great Britain, CE or UKCA can be used. Below-limit equipment must not carry that marking unless another applicable law requires it.

What should I specify before ordering gate valves?

Fluid, pressure, temperature, body and trim grades, seat construction, stem arrangement, connection drawing, face-to-face length, leakage acceptance criteria and batch-linked test records.

How do I check gate valves when they arrive?

Match identification and material records, measure connections, operate the gate through its full travel, inspect sealing faces and packing, and review or repeat the agreed shell and seat tests.
