Duty on industrial ball valves

Heading 8481 covers taps, cocks, valves and similar appliances for pipes and vessels. Industrial ball valves fall within its ball-and-plug-valve family. The table shows connection and operating variants using the same supplied tariff line, rather than separate commodity codes.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 3 October 2026, code 8481 80 81 90 carried 2% duty for goods from China. The supplied record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, tariff suspension or attached import control for this line. Suspensions recorded elsewhere in the heading should not be applied to these ball valves.

Confirm the commodity code against the valve's function and specification before ordering. For the wider heading, see taps, mixer valves and radiator valves. The UK import duty and VAT guide explains customs valuation and import VAT.

Specify the fluid, pressure and valve construction

State the fluid, operating pressure and temperature range, body and ball materials, seat and stem-seal materials, bore, connection details and operating method. Specify whether the valve isolates flow or performs another function. Agree a drawing, material evidence, test method and acceptance criteria before approving production.

The Pressure Equipment (Safety) Regulations cover pressure equipment and assemblies with maximum allowable pressure above 0.5 bar, subject to exclusions. A finished product must comply with applicable legislation when placed on the Great Britain market. Ask the supplier to explain the proposed pressure-equipment classification and provide the assessment documents for review through testing and certification.

For valves intended for water supplied by a water undertaker in England and Wales, confirm the applicable quality, standard and suitability requirements with the relevant water undertaker or authority. Identify this application before selecting materials and requesting supporting test evidence.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 2,000 small manual industrial ball valves under 8481 80 81 90, invoiced at £8,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,200. Duty at 2% is £184. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,384, so it is £1,876.80. Import taxes total £2,060.80; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £184 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Materials: match body, ball, stem, seats and seals to the approved specification and material records; investigate substitutions before accepting the batch.

Connections: check thread form, flange drilling, sealing faces, weld ends and overall dimensions against the drawing; trial-fit the intended mating connection.

Leak testing: witness the agreed body, seat and stem tests, record the test conditions and results, and operate the valve to check movement and closing position.

Arrival condition: check for corrosion, impact damage, contaminated bores and damaged end protectors; match model and batch identification to the paperwork. Use the quality inspection guide to plan checks before shipment and on receipt.

What goes wrong

A sample can fit correctly while production uses a different thread, seat compound or body material. Write these details into the order and compare production evidence with the approved sample. A room-temperature leak test alone does not establish suitability for the buyer's fluid and operating temperature.

Poorly finished sealing faces, debris around the seats and damaged stem seals can produce leakage after installation. Agree how failed tests, reworked valves and material substitutions will be recorded, and check that the documents describe the delivered model rather than a similar valve.

The supplied tariff record gives 2% for 8481 80 81 90, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control on that line.

Do pressure equipment rules apply to industrial ball valves?

They cover pressure equipment above 0.5 bar maximum allowable pressure, subject to exclusions. Ask for a review of the exact valve and application before accepting the supplier's compliance documents.

What should I specify when ordering ball valves?

The fluid, pressure and temperature range, body and ball materials, seats and seals, bore, connections, operating method, drawing and agreed leak-test acceptance criteria.

How do I check a shipment of industrial ball valves?

Match materials and identification to the order, gauge connections, inspect sealing faces, operate samples and review witnessed body, seat and stem leak-test results.
