Industrial globe valves from China carry 2% UK duty; narrowly specified air-conditioning service valves can qualify for 0% suspension. Globe valve codes and Chinese-origin duty
Heading 8481 covers taps, cocks, valves and similar appliances. Globe valves have separate lines for cast iron, steel and other materials. Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, the selected lines carried 2% third-country duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measures and no attached import controls.
The air-conditioning service-valve line has a 0% autonomous suspension. The other-materials residual line also has a suspension restricted to specified air-conditioning service valves. Ordinary industrial globe valves do not qualify merely because they share that code. The suspension footnotes exclude mixtures, preparations or products made up of different components containing these products.

Specify the body, seat and operating conditions
State the fluid, maximum allowable pressure, operating temperature and whether the valve is intended for isolation or throttling. Specify body and bonnet material, stem and seat materials, packing, connection geometry, face-to-face dimensions, flow direction and handwheel or actuator arrangement. For throttling, agree the required flow characteristic and operating range.
The pressure equipment safety rules cover design, manufacture and conformity assessment where maximum allowable pressure exceeds 0.5 bar, subject to exclusions. Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative shipment of steel industrial globe valves under 8481 80 73 90, invoiced at £8,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,200. Duty at 2% is £184. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,384, so it is £1,876.80. Materials: match body, bonnet, stem and seat certificates to the supplied batch; check for unapproved substitutions.
Connections: measure flange drilling or threads, sealing faces and face-to-face dimensions against the approved drawing.
Operation and leakage: check smooth stem travel and repeatable closure; witness the agreed shell and seat tests and record packing or bonnet leakage.

What goes wrong
A valve can fit the pipework yet fail in service because its packing or seat material does not suit the fluid and temperature. Rough stems, damaged seats and inconsistent closure can cause leakage. Agree test conditions and acceptance criteria against the intended duty rather than accepting a generic factory test sheet.
Incorrect flange drilling, a different face-to-face dimension or reversed flow orientation can delay installation. Keep the approved drawing tied to the purchase order and compare arrival measurements with the inspection record before releasing the batch.
