Sourcing industrial diaphragm valves from China
Industrial diaphragm valves from China carry 2% duty on the candidate lines shown, so the ordinary duty range is a single rate. Check the valve's function and whether pressure-equipment rules apply before ordering for Great Britain. Cambridge China Bridge sources industrial diaphragm valves.

Duty depends on the valve's function
Heading 8481 covers taps, cocks, valves and similar appliances for pipes and vessels. This guide focuses on industrial diaphragm valves. The table gives candidate lines for shut-off, process-control and pressure-reducing functions; a diaphragm mechanism alone does not settle the code. See the butterfly valves guide for wider heading coverage.
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, the selected lines carry 2% ordinary duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measures or attached import controls recorded. Conditional 0.00 % suspensions appear on 8481 10 99 90 and 8481 80 59 90, restricted respectively to a specified electromagnetic pressure-reducing valve and an engine idle-air control valve. They are not general diaphragm-valve concessions.
Give your broker the operating function, body material, drawings and intended application when confirming the commodity code. Check any suspension against its complete tariff description before claiming it. Budget import VAT separately from duty using the UK import duty and VAT guide.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Other valves: candidate line for diaphragm shut-off valves | 8481 80 99 90 | 2% | None |
| Other process-control valves: candidate line for diaphragm control valves | 8481 80 59 90 | 2% | None |
| Other cast-iron or steel pressure-reducing valves | 8481 10 19 90 | 2% | None |
| Other pressure-reducing valves of other materials | 8481 10 99 90 | 2% | None |
Specify the diaphragm and service conditions
State the fluid, concentration, solids content, operating temperature and pressure, including cleaning conditions. Specify weir or straight-through construction, body and lining materials, diaphragm compound, reinforcement and attachment. Ask for compatibility evidence for the actual service rather than accepting a generic claim that the valve suits chemicals.
Include connection drawings, installation envelope, flow direction, manual or actuated operation and the required position on loss of actuator power or air. Agree seat-leakage and external-leakage acceptance criteria, test conditions and replacement-diaphragm identification.
For Great Britain, pressure-equipment regulations regulate design, manufacture and conformity assessment of equipment and assemblies with maximum allowable pressure greater than 0.5 bar. Before ordering, ask for a documented scope assessment and the applicable compliance documents for the valve. Keep its safety classification separate from its customs classification.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative batch of manual industrial diaphragm shut-off valves under 8481 80 99 90, invoiced at £8,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,200. Duty at 2% is £184. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,384, so it is £1,876.80. Import taxes total £2,060.80; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £184 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Materials: match body, lining and diaphragm identification to the approved specification and batch records; inspect the diaphragm for cuts, distortion and incorrect attachment.
Connections: check flange drilling or threads, face-to-face dimensions and sealing faces against the drawing; inspect lining continuity around ports.
Operation and leakage: witness the agreed pressure and seat-leakage tests, cycle the valve and check actuator response and the specified failure position.
Arrival condition: inspect for impact damage, corrosion, debris and exposed connection faces; reconcile valve identification, test records and spare diaphragms before installation. Use a written inspection plan.
What goes wrong
A substituted diaphragm compound can pass an initial water test yet swell, harden or crack in the process fluid. A mismatched diaphragm or compressor can prevent full closure. Tie material approval and replacement parts to the exact valve design, and check any proposed substitution before shipment.
Incorrect connection dimensions, damaged linings and unsuitable actuator failure positions can make an otherwise working valve unusable. Set acceptance criteria before production and retain an approved sample alongside the drawings.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on diaphragm valves from China?
The selected candidate lines carry 2% ordinary duty, with no recorded anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Listed suspensions cover narrowly specified products, not diaphragm valves generally.
Which commodity code covers an industrial diaphragm valve?
Confirm its function first. Shut-off, process-control and pressure-reducing valves have different candidate lines. Send drawings and the operating description to your customs broker.
Do pressure-equipment rules apply to diaphragm valves?
For Great Britain, the regulations regulate pressure equipment and assemblies above 0.5 bar maximum allowable pressure. Ask for a documented assessment of whether and how they apply to your valve.
What should I check before accepting the shipment?
Check diaphragm and lining materials, connection dimensions, operation and agreed leakage tests. Match valve identification to test records and confirm that replacement diaphragms fit the supplied design.
