Sourcing butterfly valves from China

Butterfly valves from China normally carry 2% UK duty; a narrowly defined diesel-engine throttle assembly can qualify for 0% suspension. For Great Britain, check whether pressure equipment rules apply and verify the required conformity assessment before sale. Cambridge China Bridge sources butterfly valves.

Butterfly valve duty and the limited suspension

Heading 8481 covers taps, cocks, valves and similar appliances, but this guide concerns butterfly valves. Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, code 8481 80 85 90 carried 2% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no attached import controls in the supplied record. The table shows configurations within that same line, rather than separate tariff subdivisions.

The 0% suspension is limited to a throttle body and valve assembly in a cast aluminium alloy housing containing a butterfly valve, actuator and throttle position sensor, for manufacturing air intake systems for motor vehicle diesel engines. It is not a general exemption for industrial butterfly valves. The record also excludes mixtures, preparations or products made up of different components containing these products from the suspension.

Confirm the commodity code from the complete assembly specification before ordering. For the wider valve heading, see industrial ball valves. Freight and insurance normally enter the customs value; the import duty and VAT guide explains the calculation.

Specify the seat, disc and pipe connection

State the fluid, operating temperature, working pressure and intended isolation or throttling duty. Specify body, disc, stem and seat materials separately. Agree whether the seat is replaceable, the required closing direction and the leakage acceptance criteria. Do not accept a material description that names only the body.

Choose wafer, lug or flanged construction and provide the mating flange drawing, bore, face-to-face dimension and available disc clearance. For actuator-operated valves, agree torque at the intended service conditions, mounting, controls and the required position following loss of power or air.

For Great Britain, pressure equipment rules cover equipment above 0.5 bar maximum allowable pressure, subject to exclusions. Where applicable, importers must check the manufacturer's required conformity assessment and provide their name, trade name or mark and postal address on the equipment, or where that is impossible, on packaging or accompanying documents. Establish applicability before approving production.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 40 industrial butterfly valves; FOB value and freight are illustrative. under 8481 80 85 90, invoiced at £8,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,200. Duty at 2% is £184. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,384, so it is £1,876.80. Import taxes total £2,060.80; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £184 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Fit: compare flange holes, face-to-face dimensions and disc clearance with the approved drawing and mating pipework.

Materials: match body, disc, stem and seat identification to the agreed specification and supporting material records.

Operation and leakage: witness the agreed shell and seat tests, record the conditions and results, and check travel, closing torque and actuator position indication.

Documents and packing: match model and batch identification to the records, inspect seat protection and coated surfaces, and check instructions. For pressure equipment within scope, importers must ensure instructions are clear, legible and easily understandable English. Use the inspection guide to plan checks before shipment and on arrival.

What goes wrong

A valve can match the nominal pipe size yet fail to fit because its disc fouls the pipe bore or its flange drilling differs. A substituted seat compound can also change compatibility with the fluid and temperature. Approve a drawing and material schedule, then compare production samples against them.

An actuator that cycles an unloaded sample may struggle against the actual service load. Agree the operating conditions for acceptance testing. A generic factory certificate is not a substitute for establishing which conformity assessment applies to the supplied model.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on butterfly valves from China?

Code 8481 80 85 90 carries 2% duty in the supplied tariff record, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. A narrowly specified diesel-engine throttle assembly has a conditional 0% suspension.

Do butterfly valves need pressure equipment conformity assessment?

Check the intended service and maximum allowable pressure. The Great Britain rules cover pressure equipment above 0.5 bar, subject to exclusions; importers must verify the required assessment where applicable.

What should I specify for a butterfly valve seat?

Specify the compound, fluid compatibility, temperature conditions, replaceability and agreed leakage acceptance criteria. Match the production seat to the approved material specification.

How do I check that a butterfly valve will fit?

Compare the approved valve and mating flange drawings. Check drilling, face-to-face dimensions, bore and clearance for the disc throughout its travel, rather than relying on nominal size alone.
