Sourcing check valves from China
Check valves from China carry 2% UK duty on the listed lines, with a conditional suspension to 0.00 % for a specified steel valve. Check whether pressure-equipment rules apply before sale in Great Britain, and match the valve to the fluid and installation. Cambridge China Bridge sources check valves.

Check-valve duty and the steel-valve suspension
Heading 8481 covers taps, cocks, valves and similar appliances. This guide covers check valves, also called non-return valves, which allow forward flow and resist reverse flow. For other products in the heading, see our taps, mixers and radiator valves guide.
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 3 October 2026, the listed check-valve lines carry 2% duty from China, with no recorded anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Code 8481 30 91 91 has a 0.00 % suspension for steel valves with opening pressure not exceeding 800 kilopascals and external diameter not exceeding 37 millimetres. Its footnote excludes mixtures, preparations or products made up of different components containing these products.
That suspended line also carries a supplementary-unit import entry. HMRC says to check the tariff's measurement units and quantities for the selected country; the supplied record does not identify the unit, so confirm it with your customs broker. Match material and the full technical description before claiming a suspension. See finding your commodity code and UK import duty and VAT.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steel mechanical fuel check valves meeting the specified tariff description | 8481 30 91 30 | 2% | None |
| Steel check valves within the tariff opening-pressure and diameter limits | 8481 30 91 91 | 2% | None |
| Other cast-iron or steel check valves | 8481 30 91 99 | 2% | None |
| Mechanical fuel check valves under the tariff's other-material branch | 8481 30 99 50 | 2% | None |
Specify the opening pressure and reverse seal
State the fluid, temperature range, working pressure, opening pressure and permitted reverse leakage. Choose the mechanism, such as swing, lift or spring-loaded, and specify body alloy, seat and seal materials, connection dimensions and installation orientation. Agree test conditions for forward flow, reverse sealing and body leakage, rather than accepting an unexplained pressure rating.
For Great Britain, pressure-equipment rules cover equipment above 0.5 bar maximum allowable pressure, subject to exclusions, and include pressure accessories. Establish whether the particular valve is covered. Where applicable, importers must check the manufacturer's conformity assessment and provide importer contact details. Ask for the classification and supporting documents before approving production.
For mains-water installations in England and Wales, fittings must be of appropriate quality and standard and suitable for their circumstances of use. Agree the evidence your customer needs for the exact valve and application. Arrange testing and certification against the agreed specification.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 2,000 steel check valves; FOB value and freight are illustrative under 8481 30 91 99, invoiced at £24,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £25,500. Duty at 2% is £510. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £26,010, so it is £5,202. Import taxes total £5,712; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £510 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Connections: gauge threads or flange dimensions against the approved drawing and check mating parts fit.
Operation: check the flow arrow, installation orientation and opening behaviour against the approved sample.
Leakage: witness body and reverse-seat tests under the agreed conditions and retain results linked to the batch.
Materials and records: compare body, spring and seal materials with the order; match model identification and reports to the delivered goods. Plan quality inspection around these checks.
What goes wrong
A spring substitution can raise opening pressure enough to restrict flow. Debris, rough seat machining or an unsuitable seal can cause reverse leakage even when the body passes a pressure test. Incorrect installation orientation can stop the mechanism working as expected. Test the approved configuration with the intended fluid conditions.
Do not treat a catalogue claim of backflow protection as proof that the valve suits the customer's water installation. Ask for evidence covering the exact model and use. For the fuel-valve tariff lines, compare every detail of the description; a similar appearance does not establish classification or suspension eligibility.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on check valves from China?
The listed lines carry 2% duty. Code 8481 30 91 91 has a conditional 0.00 % suspension. No anti-dumping or countervailing duty is recorded for these lines.
What should I specify when ordering check valves?
Specify fluid, temperature, working and opening pressure, reverse leakage, mechanism, materials, connections and installation orientation. Agree the test conditions before production.
Do check valves need pressure-equipment compliance?
Check the particular valve against the scope and exclusions. The rules cover pressure equipment above 0.5 bar maximum allowable pressure and include pressure accessories.
How do I check a non-return valve shipment?
Check connections, flow direction, opening behaviour, body leakage and reverse-seat leakage. Match materials and test records to the delivered model and batch.
