Sourcing pressure relief valves from China

Pressure relief valves from China carry 2% UK duty across the relevant material categories, with no anti-dumping duty listed. For valves within pressure equipment rules, the importer must check conformity assessment before sale in Great Britain. Cambridge China Bridge sources pressure relief valves.

Duty on pressure relief valves

Heading 8481 covers taps, cocks, valves and similar appliances. Pressure relief valves release fluid to protect against excessive pressure; they differ from pressure-reducing valves that regulate downstream pressure. This guide covers complete relief valves. See the wider valves guide for taps, mixers and radiator valves.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 3 October 2026, both relevant safety or relief valve codes carried 2% duty for goods from China. The supplied entries list no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, tariff suspension or attached import control. Material examples share codes in the table.

Confirm the body material and actual valve function against the commodity code guide. A supplier calling a product a pressure valve does not establish its classification. Budget import VAT separately using the import duty and VAT guide.

Specify set pressure and discharge capacity

Give the factory the intended fluid, temperature range, maximum allowable pressure, set pressure and required discharge capacity. Specify allowable back pressure, reseating behaviour, seat leakage acceptance, body and spring materials, seal compatibility, inlet and outlet connections, and mounting orientation. Agree the test method and acceptance criteria before approving a sample.

The pressure equipment rules cover equipment with maximum allowable pressure greater than 0.5 bar, subject to exclusions, and include safety accessories. For in-scope valves, the importer must check the manufacturer's conformity assessment. Ask for the classification rationale and evidence matching the exact model and intended duty, rather than accepting a certificate for a similar valve.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of 2,000 brass pressure relief valves under 8481 40 90 90, invoiced at £8,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,200. Duty at 2% is £184. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,384, so it is £1,876.80. Import taxes total £2,060.80; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £184 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: match model, body material, connections and pressure settings to the approved specification and purchase order.

Performance: witness agreed opening, reseating and seat leakage tests; match discharge-capacity evidence to the supplied configuration and fluid.

Condition: inspect threads, flange faces, seats, adjustment seals and protective caps for damage, contamination or unauthorised adjustment.

Documents: for in-scope valves, check conformity evidence and English instructions. The importer must provide its name and postal address on the equipment, or where this is not possible, on packaging or accompanying documentation. Use a written inspection plan.

What goes wrong

A valve can fit the pipework yet have the wrong opening pressure or insufficient discharge capacity. Spring substitution, a different seat material or contamination can change behaviour. Keep the approved sample, freeze the bill of materials and require test records linked to the shipment.

A pressure-reducing valve offered as a relief valve is a specification mismatch. A conformity mark alone does not establish the intended application. Resolve discrepancies before shipment; an importer with reason to believe in-scope equipment does not meet essential safety requirements must not place it on the Great Britain market.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on pressure relief valves from China?

The supplied tariff entries show 2% for both relevant material categories, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control listed.

Do pressure relief valves need conformity assessment?

For valves within the pressure equipment rules, the importer must check that the manufacturer has carried out the relevant conformity assessment. Confirm scope and classification for the exact model.

Is a pressure-reducing valve the same as a relief valve?

No. A reducing valve regulates downstream pressure; a relief valve releases fluid when pressure rises to its opening setting. Specify the required function before comparing offers.

What should I test before accepting a shipment?

Check opening pressure, reseating and seat leakage against agreed criteria. Verify connections and materials, and match discharge-capacity evidence to the valve configuration and intended fluid.
