Duty and classification for needle valves
Heading 8481 covers taps, cocks, valves and similar appliances for pipes, tanks and related equipment. The table gives classification candidates for industrial needle valves, not interchangeable codes. Confirm whether the valve is a globe-type valve, a process control valve or another appliance from its construction, material and function.
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, the selected lines carried standard duty of 2% for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measures and no attached import controls. The other-material globe-valve and other process-control lines have conditional suspensions for specified air-conditioning service valves and engine idle-air control valves respectively. Those descriptions do not establish relief for ordinary industrial needle valves.

Specify the needle, seat and pressure duty
Specify the fluid, pressure and temperature range, body and stem materials, needle profile, seat material, packing and flow characteristics. State whether shut-off as well as fine adjustment is required. Put connection dimensions, thread form, sealing method, flow direction and mounting details on the approved drawing. Agree the test medium, pressure, duration and leakage acceptance criteria rather than accepting an unspecified factory leak test.
For Great Britain, the pressure-equipment rules cover equipment with maximum allowable pressure greater than 0.5 bar, subject to exclusions. Ask the manufacturer to establish the applicable classification. Equipment within the sound-engineering-practice provisions needs adequate instructions and must not carry CE or UKCA conformity marking unless another applicable law requires it. Where relevant, importers must check the manufacturer's conformity assessment and provide their contact details.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 40 steel industrial needle valves, subject to classification confirmation under 8481 80 73 90, invoiced at £8,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,200. Duty at 2% is £184. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,384, so it is £1,876.80. What goes wrong
A valve can resemble the approved sample while using a different needle taper, seat or packing. The result may be abrupt flow adjustment, poor shut-off or leakage at the stem. Threads that appear to fit can still have the wrong sealing geometry. Record these features in the order and compare production samples with the approved drawing.
Do not treat a pressure-test sheet or a generic certificate as evidence for every model. Ask for the classification rationale and documents for the actual valve supplied. Separate seat leakage from external leakage in the inspection record, and quarantine arrival damage or contamination before installation.
