Sourcing knife gate valves from China
Knife gate valves from China carry 2% UK duty across the relevant steel and other-material gate valve lines. Where pressure equipment rules apply, their requirements must be met before sale in Great Britain. Specify the medium, sealing direction and leakage acceptance before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge sources knife gate valves.

UK duty on knife gate valves
Heading 8481 covers taps, cocks, valves and similar appliances for pipes and vessels. For knife gate valves, the supplied tariff lines distinguish steel gate valves from other gate valves. The table repeats each relevant code for manual and pneumatic variants; these are product examples, rather than separate tariff subdivisions. For steam traps, see our steam trap sourcing guide.
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, both relevant gate valve lines carried 2% duty for goods from China. Neither had an anti-dumping or countervailing measure, tariff suspension or attached import control in the supplied facts. Import VAT is normally 20%; see UK import duty and VAT.
Confirm the commodity code using the valve construction, material and function before shipment. A pneumatic actuator does not by itself make the valve a pneumatic transmission valve. For the broader product family, see industrial gate valves.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steel knife gate valves, manually operated | 8481 80 63 90 | 2% | None |
| Other knife gate valves, manually operated | 8481 80 69 99 | 2% | None |
Specify the slurry duty and sealing direction
Describe the liquid or slurry, solids, abrasiveness, temperature and pressure conditions. Specify body and blade materials, seat and packing materials, bore, flange drilling, face-to-face dimensions and installation orientation. State whether sealing is needed in either direction and whether the valve will isolate against pressure with the downstream pipe removed.
For pneumatic versions, agree available air pressure, actuator thrust, stroke, controls, position indication and behaviour on loss of air. Ask for operating instructions, material evidence and pressure and seat leakage reports for the exact model. Agree test conditions and acceptance criteria before production.
Where the Pressure Equipment (Safety) Regulations apply, their requirements must be met before placing the equipment on the Great Britain market. Establish the applicable route for the actual valve and service conditions before approving production; arrange testing and certification around that decision.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 40 manually operated steel knife gate valves; FOB value and freight including insurance in whole pounds under 8481 80 63 90, invoiced at £8,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,200. Duty at 2% is £184. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,384, so it is £1,876.80. Import taxes total £2,060.80; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £184 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Dimensions: check flange drilling, bore, face-to-face dimensions and actuator clearance against the approved drawing, including on arrival.
Materials: match body, blade, seat and packing to the order and supporting records; inspect blade edges, surface damage and corrosion.
Sealing: witness the agreed shell, seat and packing tests, using the specified sealing direction and recording actual leakage.
Operation: check complete blade travel, smooth movement, actuator alignment and position indication; inspect transport restraints and flange protection. Agree coverage through quality inspection.

What goes wrong
A valve can fit the pipe yet fail the application. Sealing in the wrong direction, unsuitable elastomers or an actuator selected without allowing for solids can cause leakage or stalled travel. A clean-water demonstration alone does not establish performance with the buyer's slurry.
Blade damage, loose packing and substituted seat materials can undermine an approved sample. Keep the drawing, material schedule and acceptance criteria attached to the order. On arrival, separate damaged or mismatched valves before installation and compare their identification with the inspection records.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on knife gate valves from China?
The relevant steel and other-material gate valve lines both carry 2% duty in the supplied tariff facts, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Import VAT is normally 20%.
Which commodity code covers a knife gate valve?
The supplied candidates are 8481 80 63 90 for steel gate valves and 8481 80 69 99 for other gate valves. Confirm the actual construction, material and function before declaring.
Can I use a knife gate valve for abrasive slurry?
Agree the solids, abrasiveness, pressure and temperature with the factory. Specify suitable blade, seat and packing materials, then assess a sample under representative service conditions.
What should I check on a pneumatic knife gate valve?
Check available air pressure, actuator thrust, complete blade travel, alignment, position indication and behaviour on loss of air. Confirm sealing performance in the agreed direction.
