Sourcing small-run custom handbags from China
Around 100 custom handbags can be made in China by workshops that take small runs; the unit price is higher than at volume because patterns, samples and material minimums are spread over fewer bags, so get an itemised quote. We charge no sourcing fee on goods orders and add no minimum of our own. UK duty is 2% for leather or textile bags and 8% for plastic sheeting.
Custom fashion bags and handbags in runs of about 100 from China: how small-run pricing works, UK duty of 2% to 8%, and the leather and stitching checks.

Small-run economics
At about 100 bags, fixed costs dominate: pattern making, one or two rounds of samples, cutting dies or templates, hardware with logo engraving, and leather or fabric bought in the supplier's minimum roll or hide quantity. Spread over 100 bags these add more per bag than they do at larger runs, so the unit price falls as quantity rises.
Ask the factory to quote the sample fee, tooling, material and making cost as separate lines, so you can see what a larger second order would save. Using the factory's stock leather, lining and hardware instead of custom colours usually lowers the minimum and the cost. Factory minimums are set by each workshop, separately from us.
Cambridge China Bridge charges no sourcing fee or commission on goods orders and adds no minimum of its own; factory sample fees and courier costs are passed on at cost, confirmed in writing first.
UK duty
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 27 September 2026, handbags of heading 4202 carried 2% from China with an outer surface of leather or composition leather, 8% with an outer surface of plastic sheeting (including many PU-coated bags), 2% of textile materials and 2% of other materials, with no anti-dumping duty.
Totes are covered in our printed tote bags guide, cosmetic bags in our cosmetic bags guide and luggage in our own-label luggage guide; confirm the commodity code.

Chemical and labelling rules
Under UK REACH Annex XVII entry 47, leather articles and articles with leather parts that come into contact with the skin must not contain chromium VI at 3 mg/kg or more of the leather's dry weight, so ask for a chromium VI test on each leather. Textile bags with at least 80% textile fibres by weight fall under the textile labelling rules enforced by the Textile Products (Labelling and Fibre Composition) Regulations 2012.
Consumer bags must also be safe under the General Product Safety Regulations 2005.
Worked duty example
Suppose, purely for illustration, you import 100 leather handbags under 4202 21 00 90. At £4,200 free on board and £350 to ship and insure, the customs value is £4,550. Leather handbags at 2% pay £91 of duty; VAT is then worked out on value plus duty, £4,641, giving £928.20. Of the £1,019.20 paid at import, only the £91 of duty stays a cost for a VAT-registered business. The method is set out in how UK import duty and VAT work.
Inspection checklist
Materials: compare leather grain, colour and thickness with the approved sample, and check the chromium VI report.
Make: check stitch density and straightness, edge painting, handle and strap attachment under load, zip and hardware function, and lining fit.
Branding and packing: check logo placement and engraving, dust bags, tissue and carton packing to stop crushing.
What goes wrong
Small bag runs fail on material substitution, finishing and handles. Leather differs from the sample hide, edge paint cracks, handles pull out under weight, hardware plating tarnishes, and bags are crushed in transit.
Approve a pre-production sample and inspect all 100 bags before shipping. See our quality inspection guide.
