Sourcing laptop sleeves from China
Laptop sleeves from China in the selected heading 4202 lines carry UK duty of 2% to 8%, depending on the outer surface. Consumer sleeves must be safe. Confirm the material and usable internal dimensions before approving production. Cambridge China Bridge sources laptop sleeves.

UK duty by outer surface
Heading 4202 covers bags, cases and similar containers. The selected lines are candidates for laptop sleeves classed as other containers, rather than a classification for every design. Handles, compartments and overall construction can change the assessment. For the wider heading, see cosmetic bags, tool bags and pouches.
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 3 October 2026, the selected Chinese-origin lines carry 2% for leather, composition leather or textile outer surfaces and 8% for plastic sheeting. They show no anti-dumping or countervailing duties and no suspensions. Textile and leather lines attach CITES controls; leather lines also attach cat and dog fur and seal-product controls.
For materials from species listed in CITES Annex A, B or C, permits are required. Confirm species and the applicable import and export documents with your customs broker before sourcing from China. For seal products and cat or dog fur, the UK Trade Tariff attaches controls: ask your broker to confirm the requirements before ordering. Send the sleeve construction, material details and sample for commodity code confirmation.

Specify usable fit, padding and closure
Specify usable internal length, width and depth, the laptop models to be accommodated, and whether the device will have a fitted shell. A screen-size description alone does not establish fit. Approve samples with the actual devices, including insertion through the opening and closure without pressure on the corners.
Record the outer fabric or sheeting, lining, padding material and thickness, seam allowance, corner construction and zip guard. Agree logo position, colour, print method and individual packing. Ask for checks on lining colour transfer, coating peel and zip rubbing against the device.
Consumer sleeves must be safe. Assess exposed sharp zip parts and detachable fittings. For leather parts that contact skin, the reference guide identifies the UK REACH chromium VI restriction; request a matching material test report. Use testing and certification support to settle the relevant checks.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 100 textile laptop sleeves under 4202 92 98 90, invoiced at £350 free on board, with £100 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £450. Duty at 2% is £9. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £459, so it is £91.80. Import taxes total £100.80; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £9 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Fit: measure usable internal space and test the approved laptop models on bulk samples and again on arrival.
Protection: compare padding and corner coverage with the approved sample; check for hard seam ridges or exposed zip teeth inside.
Make: operate each sampled zip, pull gently at seams and check lining attachment, loose threads and coating separation.
Branding and packing: check print rub, colour transfer, model labels and carton condition against the order. Plan checks using quality inspection.
What goes wrong
A sleeve can match the outside measurements but lose usable space to thick seams or padding. The opening may be narrower than the compartment, and a laptop with a fitted shell may strain the zip. Record usable dimensions and keep an approved sample rather than relying on the supplier's screen-size label.
Material substitution changes feel and protection and may change duty. Check bulk fabric, padding and lining against retained samples. Treat waterproof or drop-protection wording as claims to verify through agreed testing before using them in listings.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on laptop sleeves from China?
For the selected heading 4202 lines, leather, composition leather and textile outer surfaces pay 2%; plastic sheeting pays 8%. No anti-dumping or countervailing duties or suspensions are shown.
How do I specify the correct laptop sleeve size?
Specify usable internal length, width and depth, the actual laptop models and any fitted shell. Test insertion and zip closure with the devices, rather than relying on screen size.
Does a coated fabric sleeve always pay plastic duty?
No. The reference guide distinguishes coated nonwovens that remain textile from those classified as plastic. Send material details and a sample for commodity code confirmation.
What should I inspect when laptop sleeves arrive?
Check usable fit, padding at corners, zip guards, seams, lining colour transfer and print rub against the approved sample. Compare labels and packing with the order.
