Sourcing crossbody bags from China
UK duty on crossbody handbags from China ranges from 2% to 8% on the selected lines. The outer surface determines the material category: leather and textile lines carry 2%, while plastic sheeting carries 8%. Consumer bags sold in Great Britain must be safe. Cambridge China Bridge sources crossbody bags.

Crossbody handbag duty depends on the outer surface
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 3 December 2026, the selected handbag lines within heading 4202 cover handbags with or without a shoulder strap. For goods from China, leather, composition leather and textile outer surfaces carry 2% duty; plastic sheeting carries 8%. These lines show no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no tariff suspension. Import VAT is 20%.
The leather and textile lines attach CITES import and export controls; the leather lines also attach cat and dog fur and seal-product controls. Listed species need CITES documentation. Cat and dog fur products are banned from import. Seal products are generally banned, with limited exceptions. For animal-derived components from China, confirm the species, admissibility and supporting documents with your customs broker before ordering.
The table covers crossbody designs that qualify as handbags. A sling backpack or specialised equipment carrier needs its own classification assessment. Send the broker photographs, intended use and the outer material construction, including coatings, to confirm the commodity code. For the wider handbag family, see small-run custom handbags.

Specify the strap, usable opening and outer material
Specify finished bag dimensions, usable zip opening, pocket positions and strap adjustment range. Test the sample across the body over the clothing your customer will wear. Check whether the buckle sits comfortably and whether the bag stays upright when loaded. Name the strap webbing or leather, anchor reinforcement, swivel clips and hardware finish.
Describe the outer surface and coating separately from the backing and lining. Approve the actual colour, edge paint, zip and lining together in a retained sample. Agree loaded strap tests, adjustment-slip checks and colour-transfer checks before production, with written acceptance criteria.
Consumer bags supplied in Great Britain must be safe under the General Product Safety Regulations 2005. For leather straps or panels that touch skin, confirm whether UK REACH chromium restrictions apply and obtain material-specific test evidence. Use testing and certification to define the checks for the actual materials.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: 300 textile crossbody handbags; illustrative order, not a quotation under 4202 22 90 90, invoiced at £3,450 free on board, with £420 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £3,870. Duty at 2% is £77.40. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £3,947.40, so it is £789.48. Import taxes total £866.88; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £77.40 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Materials: compare the outer surface, backing, lining and hardware with the approved sample. Look for coating peel, uneven edge paint and dye transfer onto a light cloth.
Strap and anchors: load the assembled bag as agreed, carry it across the body and inspect the anchor stitching. Check adjustment slip, clip closure and swivel movement.
Opening and pockets: insert the intended contents, operate the zip and check for lining caught in the teeth. Confirm that the phone pocket remains usable with the bag loaded.
Arrival: check for crushed bags, bent clips, damp cartons, mould and colour transfer from straps or packing. Photograph defects and retain affected packaging; see quality inspection.

What goes wrong
A sample can look right while bulk bags use thinner webbing, weaker anchor patches or a zip opening narrowed by the seam allowance. An adjustable strap can slip under load even when its stitching holds. Check the assembled bag against the retained sample and repeat the agreed tests on production goods.
A supplier's description of imitation leather does not establish whether the outer surface is textile or plastic sheeting. Resolve the material construction before customs clearance. Persistent odour, peeling edges and wet packing also need investigation before accepting the affected stock.
