Sourcing bum bags from China
Candidate UK tariff lines for bum bags from China carry 2% to 8% duty, depending on the outer surface and classification. Consumer bags sold in Great Britain must be safe. Bum-bag duty depends on the outer surface
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 28 October 2026, heading 4202 covers bags and similar containers. The table gives candidate lines for bum bags within the other-bags branches. These carry 2% for textile, leather or composition-leather outer surfaces and 8% for plastic sheeting. Import VAT is 20%. The selected lines show no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspensions.
The tariff attaches CITES import and export controls to the selected textile and leather lines, plus cat and dog fur and seal-product import controls to the leather lines. CITES-listed skins need valid permits. Cat and dog fur and products containing it are banned from import. Seal products face a ban with limited exceptions. For a China order containing animal materials, identify the species and ask your customs broker to confirm the applicable documents before shipment.
Do not classify from the lining or a coating's sales name. Send your broker the finished design, outer-material construction, photographs and a sample to confirm the commodity code. The table is a shortlist for assessment, not a classification ruling. For the wider bag family, see crossbody bags.

Specify waist fit, buckle and pocket access
Specify finished bag dimensions, usable pocket openings, outer material and coating, lining, zip direction and strap width. State the waist adjustment range with the buckle fastened, including how it is measured. Check the sample over the clothing your customers will wear, and agree how loose strap ends are retained.
Name the buckle material and construction, adjustment hardware and reinforcement at strap anchors. Approve the loaded sample for comfort, strap slip and access to the rear pocket while worn. Agree load and acceptance criteria with the factory before production.
Consumer bum bags sold in Great Britain must be safe under the General Product Safety Regulations 2005. Keep the approved sample and test records. Ask for material-specific chemical checks on coatings, prints and skin-contact parts through testing and certification.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: 300 textile bum bags, illustrative order under 4202 92 98 90, invoiced at £3,450 free on board, with £420 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £3,870. Duty at 2% is £77.40. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £3,947.40, so it is £789.48. Import taxes total £866.88; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £77.40 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Fit: measure the fastened adjustment range and check that the webbing stays in the adjuster when the loaded bag is worn and moved.
Buckle and anchors: fasten and release the buckle, apply the agreed load, and inspect for cracked clips, slipping straps, opening seams and pulled stitches.
Pockets and finish: load the intended contents, operate every zip, check lining snagging, rub the print and flex coated folds against the approved sample.
Arrival: check for damp cartons, mould, crushed buckles, dye transfer and distorted padding. Photograph defects and retain affected bags and packaging; see quality inspection.

What goes wrong
A sample can fit well while bulk bags use smoother webbing that slips through the adjuster or a weaker buckle that opens under tension. Compare the actual hardware and strap weave with the retained sample, then repeat the loaded wearing check on bulk goods.
A roomy-looking front panel can hide a narrow zip opening, and the rear pocket may become inaccessible against the body. Coatings can crack at folded corners and dark straps can transfer colour to clothing. Agree practical checks for these points before accepting production.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on bum bags from China?
The selected candidate lines carry 2% for textile, leather or composition-leather outer surfaces and 8% for plastic sheeting. No anti-dumping or countervailing duty is shown. Import VAT is 20%.
Which commodity code should I use for a fabric bum bag?
4202 92 98 90 is a candidate for other textile-surfaced bags that are not hand-made. Ask your broker to confirm the finished design and outer material before declaring it.
Does a coated bum bag pay the plastic duty rate?
A coating name alone does not settle classification. Give your broker the outer-material construction and a finished sample to assess whether the surface is textile or plastic sheeting.
How do I check whether the waist strap will slip?
Load the bag as agreed, set the strap to the intended fit and wear it while moving. Mark the strap position, then check movement through the adjuster and inspect the buckle and anchor stitching.
