Gym-bag duty depends on the outer surface

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 28 October 2026, heading 4202 includes sports bags. For the selected gym-bag lines, Chinese-origin goods attract 2% with textile, leather or composition-leather outer surfaces, and 8% with plastic-sheeting outer surfaces. These lines show no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspensions. Import VAT is 20%.

The tariff attaches CITES import and export controls to the textile and leather lines, plus cat and dog fur and seal-product import controls to leather lines. For Chinese orders, identify any animal-derived materials and confirm the applicable CITES documents with your customs broker. Cat and dog fur products are banned. Confirm with the relevant authority whether any seal products are eligible for import; commercial imports need a seal catch certificate.

Send your broker the finished design, outer-material specification, coating details and photographs. Confirm whether the hand-made distinction applies rather than choosing a line from the supplier's description. Use finding your commodity code. For the wider product family, see sports holdalls.

Specify shoe storage, wet compartments and carrying load

Specify usable internal dimensions with the shoe compartment occupied. State the outer fabric, coating, lining, base reinforcement, strap construction, zip opening and pocket layout. Check that the intended shoes, towel and training clothes fit together without forcing the zip. Agree the carrying load and the loaded test method in writing.

Define what the wet compartment must contain and how leakage will be checked. A coated fabric does not establish that stitched seams or zip openings retain moisture. Agree cleaning instructions, removable inserts, ventilation positions and whether shoulder straps detach. Approve a signed sample in the actual materials and colours.

Consumer gym bags sold in Great Britain must be safe. Keep the approved sample and test notes, and ask testing and certification to select chemical checks for coatings, prints and skin-contact straps.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 300 textile gym bags under 4202 92 91 90, invoiced at £3,450 free on board, with £420 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £3,870. Duty at 2% is £77.40. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £3,947.40, so it is £789.48. Import taxes total £866.88; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £77.40 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Materials: compare bulk fabric, coating, lining and base insert with the approved sample. Flex coated areas and rub the print to check for peeling, cracking and colour transfer.

Carrying system: load the bag as agreed, carry it by the handles and shoulder strap, and examine strap anchors, clips, adjusters and seams for slipping or damage.

Compartments and closures: fit the intended shoes and kit, operate every zip while loaded, and test the wet compartment using the agreed method. Check lining seams and pocket corners.

Arrival condition: check cartons and bags for damp, mould, persistent odour, crushed hardware and print transfer. Record defects against the approved sample using the inspection guide.

What goes wrong

A shoe pocket can consume the main compartment, leaving a bag that looks roomy but will not take the intended kit. Strap anchors can pull through thin fabric even when the webbing looks strong. Test the assembled bag with its pockets occupied, and inspect the reinforcement behind each attachment.

Wet-compartment seams can leak, lining can catch in the zip, and a substituted coating can peel at folds. Keep the signed sample, material specification and written acceptance criteria together so the factory and inspector assess the same construction.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For own-brand ranges, see sourcing for brands.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on gym bags from China?

The selected lines carry 2% for textile, leather or composition-leather outer surfaces and 8% for plastic sheeting. No anti-dumping or countervailing duty or suspensions are shown. Import VAT is 20%.

Does a coated fabric gym bag count as plastic?

Do not decide from a coating name alone. Give your customs broker the outer-material construction, coating details and a finished sample to confirm the commodity code.

How do I check a gym bag's wet compartment?

Agree what it must contain and a leakage test before production. Test the finished compartment, including seams and zip openings, rather than relying on a waterproof fabric swatch.

Do gym bags need CITES documents?

The tariff attaches CITES controls to the selected textile and leather lines. Identify any animal-derived materials and ask your customs broker to confirm whether permits or other declarations apply.
