0% duty

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 27 September 2026, compound optical microscopes, heading 9011, carried 0% on goods from China for stereoscopic microscopes, microscopes for photomicrography, other microscopes, and parts and accessories such as objectives and eyepieces, with no anti-dumping measure.

Electrical safety and children's models

Microscopes with mains-powered illumination fall under the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016, and need UKCA marking, a declaration of conformity and a UK importer name and address; electromagnetic compatibility and restricted substances rules also apply, and WEEE obligations follow.

Microscopes designed or intended for children under 14 to play with are toys under the Toys (Safety) Regulations 2011, while instruments for education or laboratory use are not, so decide the market before writing the specification.

Specifying microscopes

Specify the optical system (finite or infinity corrected), objective grade (achromat, plan achromat, fluorite) and magnifications, eyepiece field number, head type (monocular, binocular, trinocular), illumination (LED, Köhler), stage and focusing mechanism, camera port, and case and packing.

Worked duty example

For a made-up shipment of 150 laboratory compound microscopes under 9011 80 00 00, add the £1,500 of freight and insurance to the £27,000 free-on-board price and customs sees £28,500. Duty on microscopes is zero, leaving import VAT of £5,700, 20% of the customs value. For a VAT-registered buyer that is a cash-flow cost rather than a lasting one. Inspection checklist

Optics: view a stage micrometer and prepared slide at every magnification, and check sharpness across the field, parfocality when changing objectives, and that eyepieces are free of dust and fungus.

Mechanics: check coarse and fine focus run smoothly without drift, the stage moves evenly, and the nosepiece clicks positively into each position.

Electrics and packing: check the lamp, dimmer and adaptor, the plug and marking, and that each microscope is fixed in foam so the objectives cannot move.

What goes wrong

Microscope orders fail on optics, mechanics and transit. Objectives are not parfocal, images are soft at the edge, the focus drifts under the weight of the stage, fungus grows in optics stored damp, and poorly packed units arrive out of alignment.
