Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 27 September 2026, heading 9012 covers microscopes other than optical microscopes and diffraction apparatus. Both lines, the instruments (9012 10 00 00) and parts and accessories (9012 90 00 00), carried 0% on goods from China, with no anti-dumping measure, no registration and no suspension.

Radiation notification
Electron beams produce X-rays inside the instrument. Under Schedule 1 to the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017, work does not need to be notified to HSE when it is only the operation of electrical apparatus at a potential difference of no more than 30 kV that does not cause a dose rate above 1 µSv/h at 0.1 m from any accessible surface. Instruments running above 30 kV, such as most transmission electron microscopes, fall outside that exemption, so check the employer's duties before installation.
Specifying an electron microscope
Specify the electron source and accelerating voltage range, resolution at stated voltage, magnification, detectors (secondary, backscattered, EDS), vacuum modes, stage travel and sample size, software, power, cooling and vibration requirements, installation and training, warranty, spare parts and UK service response.
Worked duty example
An invented example rather than a quote: one benchtop scanning electron microscope, commodity code 9012 10 00 00, bought for £90,000 free on board, with £2,500 of freight and insurance, so £92,500 is the value customs works from. Inspection checklist
Factory acceptance: witness resolution on a standard sample at the stated voltage, and check detectors and software.
Radiation: ask for a dose rate survey at the instrument surfaces.
Packing: check shock indicators, crates, vacuum components and documentation.
What goes wrong
Electron microscope orders fail on performance and support. Resolution is quoted under ideal conditions that the site cannot meet, detectors or software licences are missing from the delivery, vibration or magnetic fields at the site degrade images, and spare parts take months to arrive.
