Sourcing polarising microscopes from China
Polarising optical microscopes from China carry 0% UK duty across the relevant microscope and accessory lines. Confirm with the relevant authority what electrical safety evidence is needed for mains-powered models sold in Great Britain. Specify strain-free optics, polariser and analyser alignment, and a centred rotating stage. Cambridge China Bridge sources polarising optical microscopes.

UK duty on polarising optical microscopes
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 6 November 2026, heading 9011 covers compound optical microscopes and their parts and accessories. The selected lines carry 0% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measures and no suspensions recorded. Polarising is an optical function; distinguish conventional compound instruments, photomicrographic instruments and stereoscopic models when selecting the line.
The supplied tariff data attaches a DCMS Export Licence control to every line. GOV.UK states that importing objects of cultural interest into Great Britain has no licensing requirements. Ask your customs broker to confirm how the attached control and its document waiver apply to the shipment, particularly for older instruments.
Confirm the commodity code using the instrument's construction, imaging equipment and supplied accessories. A camera port alone should not settle the classification. See the wider microscope sourcing guide and the duty and VAT guide.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Other microscopes, including conventional polarising models | 9011 80 00 00 | 0% | None |
| Other microscopes for photomicrography or microprojection | 9011 20 90 00 | 0% | None |
| Stereoscopic microscopes, including models with polarising accessories | 9011 10 00 00 | 0% | None |
| Microscope parts and accessories | 9011 90 00 00 | 0% | None |
Specify the polarising optical system
State whether the instrument is for thin sections, opaque specimens or both, and specify transmitted or reflected illumination accordingly. List strain-free objectives, eyepiece type, removable analyser, rotating polariser, compensator provision and a graduated rotating stage with centring adjustment. Specify whether a Bertrand lens and conoscopic observation are needed.
Agree acceptance images using your own reference specimens, both with parallel and crossed polarisers. Include camera adaptor compatibility and the exact accessories in the packing list. For mains-powered models, obtain electrical safety evidence, CE or UKCA marking, a declaration of conformity and UK importer identification. Confirm with the relevant authority which electromagnetic compatibility, restricted substances and waste electrical equipment obligations apply. Imported electrical equipment must have easily understandable English instructions.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of 150 basic polarising optical microscopes under 9011 80 00 00, invoiced at £27,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £28,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £28,500, so it is £5,700. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Polarisation: check the empty field becomes uniformly dark with crossed polarisers, then rotate a reference specimen and compare extinction and interference colours with the approved sample.
Stage and focus: centre a specimen feature and rotate the stage, checking that it stays centred. Check stage locking, smooth focusing and freedom from focus drift.
Optics and accessories: check image sharpness, parfocality, clean optics, analyser movement, compensator fit and the Bertrand lens where supplied.
Electrics and packing: check illumination, dimming, adaptor, markings and documents. Secure the instrument and loose accessories separately, then repeat alignment checks after unpacking. Use the inspection guide to agree the inspection scope.

What goes wrong
A microscope can give a sharp bright-field image yet perform poorly under crossed polarisers. Stressed optics can introduce unwanted colours, a misaligned analyser can leave a bright background, and an uncentred stage can move the specimen out of view during rotation. Approve the polarising performance rather than accepting a general microscope demonstration.
Orders also fail when compensators are omitted, camera adaptors do not match, focus drifts or transit shifts the optical alignment. Record the approved configuration and reference images, and compare the delivered instruments against them before accepting the shipment.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on polarising microscopes from China?
The relevant microscope and accessory lines under heading 9011 carry 0% duty in the supplied tariff data, read on 6 November 2026. No anti-dumping or countervailing measures are recorded.
Which commodity code covers a polarising microscope?
Conventional models may fit 9011 80 00 00. Photomicrographic and stereoscopic instruments have separate lines. Confirm the construction and imaging equipment before choosing the code.
Do polarising microscopes need CE or UKCA marking?
For mains-powered models intended for the Great Britain market, confirm with the relevant authority which CE or UKCA marking, electrical safety evidence, declaration of conformity and UK importer identification requirements apply. Check the exact instrument and power supply.
How do I check a polarising microscope before accepting it?
Check uniform darkness with crossed polarisers, specimen extinction during rotation, stage centring, sharpness and focus stability. Compare the supplied compensators and imaging accessories with the approved sample.
