Sourcing metallurgical microscopes from China

Metallurgical optical microscopes from China carry 0% UK duty across the relevant heading 9011 lines, with no listed trade remedies. Specify reflected-light optics for opaque metal samples; confirm with the relevant authority what electrical safety evidence is needed for mains-powered models sold in Great Britain. Cambridge China Bridge sources metallurgical optical microscopes.

UK duty on metallurgical optical microscopes

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 5 November 2026, heading 9011 covers compound optical microscopes and their parts and accessories. The selected lines all carry 0% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no listed suspensions. Metallurgical instruments are included within other microscopes; photographic configurations need separate classification checks.

The tariff attaches a DCMS Export Licence control to every listed line. Government guidance says there are no licensing requirements for importing objects of cultural interest into Great Britain. Ask your customs broker to confirm how the attached control applies to your shipment, particularly for used instruments.

Confirm the commodity code against the instrument's optical design, photographic equipment and any dedicated semiconductor handling equipment. A camera port alone does not establish the specialised wafer-handling description. See the wider microscope guide for the rest of the heading.

Specify reflected-light optics and specimen clearance

Specify upright or inverted construction, reflected-light illumination, brightfield or darkfield capability, polarising accessories, objective grade and working distance. State whether specimens are polished mounts, etched metal sections or larger components. Agree specimen clearance, stage travel and load, optical system, eyepiece field and camera connection.

Approve images of your own prepared metal samples through the eyepieces and camera. Agree how the supplier demonstrates field sharpness, illumination uniformity and parfocality. Record the supplied objectives, camera adaptor, calibration accessory and replacement illumination parts.

For mains-powered illumination, confirm with the relevant authority which electrical safety, electromagnetic compatibility, restricted substances and waste electrical equipment obligations apply. For Great Britain, check UKCA or CE marking, the declaration of conformity and UK importer identification. Equipment covered by the electrical safety rules must have clear, legible instructions in easily understandable English. Arrange testing and certification against the exact supplied configuration.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 150 metallurgical optical microscopes under 9011 80 00 00, invoiced at £27,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £28,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £28,500, so it is £5,700. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Optics: inspect a prepared metal specimen at every supplied magnification; check centre and edge sharpness, parfocality, glare and dust in the reflected-light path.

Mechanics: check focus drift, stage movement, specimen clearance and secure objective seating; repeat with the intended specimen holder fitted.

Imaging: check camera-adaptor fit, image coverage and calibration against a stage micrometer; compare camera images with the eyepiece view.

Electrics and packing: check illumination and dimming, plug, adaptor, marking and documents; look for loose components, moisture and transit movement. Use the quality inspection guide to record findings.

What goes wrong

Orders fail when the sample demonstrates transmitted-light viewing but the buyer needs reflected-light examination of opaque metal. Other failures include objectives with insufficient working distance, uneven illumination, focus drift, camera images with dark corners and accessories that do not fit the supplied optical system.

Use an approved metal specimen and reference images as acceptance samples. Check the complete configuration after unpacking, including the camera adaptor and specimen holder. Specify fixed packing and dry storage to reduce alignment damage and fungal contamination.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on metallurgical microscopes from China?

The relevant heading 9011 lines carry 0% duty for goods from China in the supplied tariff reading, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty.

Which commodity code covers a metallurgical optical microscope?

Other microscopes include metallurgical models under 9011 80 00 00. Check photographic configurations separately, using the complete specification rather than the supplier's product name.

Can a biological microscope inspect metal samples?

Specify reflected-light optics for opaque metal. Check an actual prepared metal specimen before ordering; a transmitted-light demonstration does not establish suitability.

What compliance documents should I request?

For mains-powered models sold in Great Britain, request electrical safety evidence, a declaration of conformity, UKCA or CE marking and UK importer identification. Check the supplied model and adaptor match the documents.
