Sourcing dark-field microscopes from China

Dark-field optical microscopes from China under heading 9011 carry 0% UK duty across the relevant lines. Mains-powered laboratory models need electrical safety compliance, CE or UKCA marking and a declaration of conformity for sale in Great Britain. Check condenser and objective compatibility. Cambridge China Bridge sources dark-field optical microscopes.

Duty and tariff controls

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 9011 covers compound optical microscopes, including instruments for photomicrography, cinephotomicrography or microprojection. All listed lines carry 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff facts list no anti-dumping or countervailing duties and no suspensions. Dark-field illumination alone does not describe the complete instrument for classification.

The tariff facts attach a control labelled DCMS Export Licence to every line. Official guidance states that importing objects of cultural interest into Great Britain has no licensing requirements, although the exporting country's export licensing regime must be followed. Ask your customs broker to confirm how the recorded flag applies to your shipment, particularly for historic instruments.

Confirm the commodity code using the complete instrument's construction, photographic function and supplied accessories. The table includes stereoscopic instruments only where that construction matches the product. For the wider product family, see biological compound microscopes.

Match the dark-field condenser to the objectives

Specify transmitted or reflected illumination, specimen type, dry or immersion operation, objective magnifications and numerical apertures, condenser compatibility, and any objective iris. Agree the condenser mounting and centring mechanism, slide clearance, camera port and accessories. Ask the factory to demonstrate dark-field images with every supplied objective using an agreed reference specimen.

For mains-powered laboratory models sold in Great Britain, obtain electrical safety evidence, CE or UKCA marking, a declaration of conformity and UK importer identification. Confirm with the relevant authority whether electromagnetic compatibility, restricted substances and waste electrical equipment obligations apply. Check that instructions are in easily understandable English. Arrange testing and certification against the exact supplied configuration.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 150 laboratory dark-field microscopes, illustrative order under 9011 80 00 00, invoiced at £27,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £28,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £28,500, so it is £5,700. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Dark field: centre the condenser and inspect the reference specimen with every supplied objective. Check for a dark background, even illumination and unwanted bright patches in both eyepiece and camera images.

Optics: check specimen detail, edge sharpness and parfocality when changing objectives. Inspect lenses for dust, fungus and scratches, and compare performance with the approved sample.

Mechanics: check condenser centring, focus travel, stage movement and nosepiece positioning. Confirm that the stage holds focus and the condenser does not foul the slide or stage.

Electrics and packing: check illumination, dimming, adaptor identity, markings and instructions. Confirm that the instrument and loose condensers are secured separately and arrive without movement or damage.

What goes wrong

A dark-field accessory can fit the microscope yet fail with the supplied objectives. An unsuitable condenser, poor centring or stray light can leave a bright background or obscure specimen detail. Dust and scratches can also appear conspicuous against the dark field. Approve images from the complete configuration rather than accepting a photograph of the accessory.

Loose packing can disturb alignment, while damp storage can leave fungus on optical surfaces. Repeat the approved specimen test on arrival and record defects before distribution. Use the quality inspection guide to define acceptance checks. If the supplier markets the instrument for disease diagnosis, assess medical-device status by intended purpose and confirm with MHRA any registration requirements before placement on the Great Britain market.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For components and parts, see sourcing for manufacturers.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on dark-field microscopes from China?

The supplied tariff facts, read on 1 October 2026, show 0% duty across heading 9011, including the relevant microscope and accessory lines. No anti-dumping or countervailing duties are listed.

Can I add a dark-field condenser to any microscope?

Do not assume compatibility. Confirm condenser mounting, centring, illumination, slide clearance and compatibility with every objective. Approve specimen images from the assembled configuration.

Does a dark-field microscope need CE or UKCA marking?

For mains-powered laboratory models, confirm CE or UKCA marking and declaration of conformity requirements for the Great Britain market with the relevant authority. Obtain evidence for the microscope and its supplied power equipment.

What should I test when dark-field microscopes arrive?

Repeat the approved specimen test with every objective. Check background darkness, illumination uniformity, camera images, condenser centring, focus stability, lens cleanliness and packing damage.
