Sourcing digital polarimeters from China

Digital polarimeters using optical radiation fall within heading 9027 and carry 0% UK duty from China, with no listed trade remedy. Before selling in Great Britain, check the applicable electrical safety, electromagnetic compatibility and hazardous-substance requirements. Cambridge China Bridge sources digital polarimeters.

Digital polarimeters: 0% UK duty

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 16 October 2026, heading 9027 covers physical and chemical analysis instruments, including polarimeters. Digital polarimeters using optical radiation fit the description of 9027 50 00 00; identifiable parts and accessories are covered by 9027 90 00 00. The table repeats the complete-instrument line for different buying configurations.

Both relevant lines carry 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff facts list no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached control for these lines. The mercury export control recorded against 9027 89 90 00 is on a different line; if your broker considers that code, confirm the attached control with them.

Confirm the commodity code using the instrument's operating principle and the exact shipment contents. Separately shipped sample tubes or calibration items need their own classification review. See the optical refractometers guide for the wider heading.

Specify rotation measurement and sample handling

Specify the measurement wavelength, rotation range, accuracy, repeatability and sample temperature conditions. Distinguish display resolution from measurement accuracy. Agree the sample tube length, minimum filling volume, wetted materials and cleaning method against the liquids you will test. State whether you need optical rotation, specific rotation or a sugar scale, and what inputs each calculation uses.

Agree an acceptance method using a documented reference plate or solution, with its wavelength and temperature conditions. Ask for raw readings, the instrument serial number and the calibration record. Specify temperature control, data export, software access and replacement tube availability before approving the sample.

For Great Britain sales, assess electrical safety scope against the rated supply, including any external power supply. Assess electromagnetic compatibility and hazardous-substance restrictions for the exact model. Request the relevant declarations and supporting documents through testing and certification.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: An illustrative batch of digital polarimeters for a laboratory distributor under 9027 50 00 00, invoiced at £10,000 free on board, with £900 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £10,900. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £10,900, so it is £2,180. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Readings: check zero stability and repeated reference readings against the agreed acceptance limits, both before shipment and on arrival.

Sample path: check tube length markings, window cleanliness, seals and leakage; confirm that bubbles can be removed without disturbing the sample.

Temperature and records: compare the displayed sample temperature with your reference measurement and confirm that exported results retain the agreed sample details.

Documents: match the instrument and power supply to the supplied declaration. For equipment within electrical safety scope, the importer must ensure easily understandable English instructions accompany it. Use the inspection guide to plan checks.

What goes wrong

A precise-looking display can hide poor repeatability. Bubbles, dirty tube windows, temperature drift and an incorrect tube-length setting can change the result. Test with your intended sample type as well as the agreed reference, and record the conditions so the factory can reproduce a failed reading.

A calibration record for another serial number or a declaration for a different power supply leaves the delivered configuration unresolved. Hold acceptance until the supplier explains the mismatch and supplies matching evidence. Agree packing that protects the optical assembly and keeps sample tubes from striking the instrument.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on digital polarimeters from China?

The supplied tariff facts show 0% duty for optical instruments under 9027 50 00 00 and parts under 9027 90 00 00, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty.

Is display resolution the same as polarimeter accuracy?

No. Specify accuracy and repeatability separately, then agree reference measurements at the intended wavelength and temperature. A finer display does not establish better measurement performance.

What should I ask for before ordering a digital polarimeter?

Ask for the wavelength, accuracy, repeatability, sample tube details, temperature conditions, reference test results and calibration record. Match compliance documents to the instrument and supplied power supply.

Do I need electrical equipment producer registration?

For commercial imports for UK sale, assess producer responsibilities: producers must register annually. Official guidance excludes equipment bought abroad and brought into the UK for your own use from its producer definition.
