Sourcing optical refractometers from China
Optical refractometers from China carry 0% UK duty under the relevant heading 9027 lines, with no listed trade remedies. Where electromagnetic compatibility rules apply, the manufacturer must supply English instructions. Specify the sample type, scale and accuracy before ordering. Optical refractometers: 0% duty
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 16 October 2026, heading 9027 covers physical and chemical analysis instruments, expressly including refractometers. The optical-radiation line 9027 50 00 00 and parts line 9027 90 00 00 carry 0% duty for goods from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspensions or attached controls. The table shows product variants sharing a tariff line, rather than separate codes for each design.
The residual line 9027 89 90 00 also carries 0%, but the supplied tariff record attaches a control labelled “Export control of mercury”. If your broker proposes that line, ask them to confirm the control's relevance to your goods and transaction. Do not treat that label as a verified import requirement for an ordinary refractometer.
Confirm the commodity code using the operating principle, intended use and whether the shipment contains complete instruments or separate parts. The wider heading guide covers other analysis instruments. For chromatographs, see our guide to sourcing HPLC systems.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Handheld optical refractometers, subject to classification confirmation | 9027 50 00 00 | 0% | None |
| Refractometer parts and accessories, subject to classification confirmation | 9027 90 00 00 | 0% | None |
Specify the sample, scale and calibration
State whether you need a handheld eyepiece instrument, a digital reader or a benchtop instrument. Specify the actual sample: sugar solution, brine, coolant or another liquid. Agree the displayed scale, measuring range, accuracy, resolution, sample temperature and temperature-compensation method. A sugar scale is not a universal concentration measurement for other liquids.
Agree prism material, sample-contact materials, cleaning method, sample volume and the reference liquids used for acceptance checks. Ask for calibration results for the ordered model and agree acceptance tolerances before production. For digital models, specify power supply, display behaviour and whether readings can be exported.
For electronic models, review hazardous-substance compliance: electrical and electronic equipment, including cables and spare parts, falls within those rules unless specifically excluded. Where electromagnetic compatibility rules apply, the manufacturer must provide English instructions. Where your business is an electrical equipment producer, annual producer registration is required. Use testing and certification to review the exact model.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of handheld optical refractometers under 9027 50 00 00, invoiced at £2,000 free on board, with £900 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £2,900. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £2,900, so it is £580. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Readings: compare samples with agreed reference liquids across the working range, record sample temperature and check repeatability after cleaning and reloading.
Optics: inspect the prism for chips and scratches, check eyepiece focus and scale readability, and test the sample cover for secure movement.
Compensation: compare readings at different agreed temperatures and check that compensation matches the sample and scale ordered.
Packing and documents: match model identifiers, calibration records, instructions and accessories to the order; check protective cases and digital power functions. Arrange quality inspection before shipment and repeat the agreed checks on arrival.

What goes wrong
An instrument can pass a zero check but miss the agreed accuracy elsewhere in its range. Wrong scales, unsuitable reference liquids, bubbles, residue on the prism and inconsistent sample temperature can produce misleading readings. Check the instrument and the measurement method before accepting or rejecting a batch.
A supplier may substitute the prism, sample cover or electronic assembly while keeping the same model label. Tie the approved sample to a written specification and require approval for substitutions. Separate optical performance checks from the document review for electronic models.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on optical refractometers from China?
The relevant heading 9027 lines carry 0% duty in the supplied tariff record read on 16 October 2026, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Confirm the exact commodity code.
Can I use a sugar refractometer for salt or coolant?
Do not assume its scale gives the concentration you need. Specify the actual liquid and agree the correct scale, conversion method and reference liquids with the supplier.
Is a zero check enough to accept a refractometer?
No. Compare readings with agreed reference liquids across the working range, check repeatability and record temperature. A zero check alone does not establish accuracy elsewhere.
What should I check for a digital refractometer?
Check reading accuracy, power functions and model-specific documents. Review hazardous-substance applicability, English instructions where electromagnetic compatibility rules apply, and producer registration where applicable.
