How to approve power adaptors and charging cables

Approve the device, power adaptor and cable as a named combination. Check connector fit and rated compatibility, measure charging under realistic use, and obtain test evidence covering the supplied configuration. Record acceptance limits and control substitutions. Cambridge China Bridge can coordinate these checks with its staff in China.

Define the combination before approving samples

Create an approval sheet naming the device, adaptor, mains lead where detachable, charging cable and firmware revision. Record manufacturers, part references, rating labels, cable construction and length, connector drawings and photographs. Identify what goes in each retail box and which replacement accessories you intend to offer.

Keep a labelled reference set and agree acceptance criteria before testing. The electronics sourcing guide covers the wider specification; this approval sheet should make the power connection reproducible rather than leave the factory to choose a compatible-looking accessory.

Check physical fit and rated compatibility separately

Compare connector drawings with the actual device socket. Check contact arrangement, barrel dimensions where relevant, insertion depth, retention and clearance around the enclosure. Connect and disconnect the sample, then check for intermittent contact during normal handling. A connector that fits is not proof of electrical compatibility.

For a fixed-output adaptor, match output voltage, polarity and output type to the device specification, and check that available current supports its intended demand. Check mains input suitability and cable ratings too. For negotiated charging, identify the power modes supported by the device, adaptor and cable, including any cable identification needed. Do not approve from headline wattage alone.

Measure charging behaviour during real use

Use the supplied cable and adaptor with production-representative hardware and firmware. Record the negotiated charging mode where applicable, voltage and current at the device, charging time and temperatures against agreed limits. Test from a depleted battery through charge completion, including charging while the device performs its intended tasks if that use is supported.

Check connection, reconnection, sleep, restart and recovery after interrupted mains power. Where an adaptor has shared outputs, check the promised behaviour when another device is connected. Investigate charging dropouts, unexpected restarts, failure to finish charging or excessive heating. A charging symbol alone does not establish the promised charging performance.

Obtain evidence for the complete supplied configuration

Official guidance says a finished product must comply with all applicable legislation when placed on the GB market. Use the electrical import rules guide for the wider obligations. Ask the laboratory to assess the device with its supplied adaptor and cable, identify applicable safety and electromagnetic compatibility work, and explain any reliance on existing component reports.

Match report photographs, model references, ratings and accessories to the approval sheet. Ask the laboratory to document which combinations are covered and whether proposed variants need further work. Use the test-report scope guide for that review. Keep ordinary functional trials separate from laboratory safety testing; arrange hazardous or fault-condition tests through a competent laboratory.

Release production against the approved set

Give the factory and inspector the approval sheet, reference set and written test method. At pre-shipment inspection, check that packed units contain the named accessories and that sampled sets meet the agreed functional criteria. Record component identities, test conditions, results and deviations so approval can be traced to the shipment.

Require written approval before changing the adaptor, cable, connector or charging firmware. Hold affected stock while you review compatibility and ask the laboratory whether existing evidence still covers it. Release only after deviations are resolved and the approval record is updated. Apply the same review to replacement accessories.

Frequently asked questions

Is a matching connector enough to approve an adaptor?

No. Check voltage, polarity, output type, available current and cable ratings, then test the named combination with the actual device.

Why does the supplied cable charge slowly?

Check supported charging modes, cable capability, connection quality and voltage drop under load. Compare results with a known reference cable while keeping the device and adaptor unchanged.

Does an adaptor test report cover the whole product?

Do not assume it does. Ask the laboratory to identify how the adaptor evidence supports the complete device and which supplied cable and operating conditions are covered.

Can the factory substitute a similar charging cable?

Require approval first. Compare connector details, construction, ratings and charging capability, then review functional results and report coverage before releasing the changed set.
