Sourcing GaN USB-C chargers from China

GaN USB-C chargers from China usually fall under other static converters in heading 8504. The supplied tariff lines all carry 0% UK duty. Mains-powered models must meet electrical safety and electromagnetic compatibility requirements; verify documents against the actual charger. Cambridge China Bridge sources GaN USB-C chargers.

A USB charger with a cable and plug.

GaN charger classification and 0% duty

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, every supplied line in heading 8504 carries 0% duty for goods from China. The data records no residual anti-dumping or countervailing duties, suspensions or attached import controls. Import VAT at 20% still applies.

Heading 8504 covers transformers, static converters and inductors. Most plug-in power adapters belong under 8504 40 95 90. Calling an adapter a charger does not settle whether it belongs under accumulator chargers. The table includes separately imported components; these are not alternative codes for a complete charger.

Confirm the commodity code using the circuit function, input and output specification and supplied accessories. For other products within this heading, see power supplies, transformers and inverters.

Specify port output, power sharing and the UK plug

Specify each USB-C port's supported charging profiles, maximum output and the power available when ports are used together. Identify the phones and laptops to test, the cable supplied and the expected behaviour when another device is connected. Ask for the GaN component identity and freeze the approved circuit board, enclosure and plug construction.

For mains-powered models, obtain electrical safety and electromagnetic compatibility reports, technical documentation and a declaration of conformity matching the exact model. Confirm the applicable UKCA or CE marking and importer identification requirements with the relevant authority. For external power supplies for household and office equipment, also confirm whether the Great Britain efficiency rules apply to the exact model. Ask for measured no-load consumption and active efficiency.

Hazardous-substance restrictions cover electrical and electronic equipment unless specifically excluded. Request supporting material evidence for the finished charger, including its cable. If you act as an electrical equipment producer, you must register annually. Use testing and certification to arrange independent checks of the agreed model.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 3,000 own-brand 65 W GaN USB-C chargers under 8504 40 95 90, invoiced at £12,000 free on board, with £800 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £12,800. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £12,800, so it is £2,560. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Output: test each port and the agreed simultaneous-use combinations with suitable loads and target devices. Check power sharing, reconnect behaviour and the supplied cable.

Heat and protection: run bulk samples under sustained load; record case temperature, output stability and ripple. Have a competent laboratory check insulation and short-circuit protection.

Construction: compare sampled units with the approved charger. Check plug pins, enclosure joints, port retention and component identity; inspect internal changes through a competent laboratory.

Documents and arrival: match model markings, ratings, conformity marking and importer details to the approved documents. On arrival, check cartons, damaged pins and loose ports, then repeat functional sampling. Agree the sampling plan through quality inspection.

What goes wrong

A headline output rating can conceal reduced power when ports share the supply. A charger may also reconnect a laptop when another device is attached. Put acceptable behaviour into the purchase specification and test the agreed combinations, rather than accepting a demonstration with an unloaded port.

Reports for a different board or enclosure do not establish the performance of the shipment. Component substitutions can change heat, ripple and filtering. Retain an approved sample, require disclosure of changes and compare bulk samples before shipment; repeat checks if arrival samples differ.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on GaN USB-C chargers from China?

The supplied heading 8504 lines carry 0% duty, with no residual anti-dumping or countervailing duties recorded. Most plug-in adapters use 8504 40 95 90. Import VAT at 20% still applies.

Does a GaN charger need CE or UKCA marking?

Confirm the applicable UKCA or CE marking, technical documentation and declaration of conformity requirements for mains-powered models with the relevant authority. Match the safety and electromagnetic compatibility evidence to the exact model and construction.

How do I check a multi-port charger's claimed output?

Test each port separately and in the agreed combinations. Record shared output, charging profiles and reconnect behaviour using the supplied cable and the phones or laptops you intend to support.

Do GaN USB-C chargers have UK efficiency requirements?

Confirm with the relevant authority whether the Great Britain efficiency rules apply to the exact external power supply for household or office equipment. Request no-load consumption and active-efficiency measurements for the exact model.
