Sourcing extension cable reels from China

Ordinary extension cable reels from China normally pay 2% UK duty; the relevant power-cable lines shown here all carry 2%. Confirm the electrical safety documentation, conformity marking and domestic plug approval requirements for the exact assembly with the relevant authority before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge sources extension cable reels.

Extension reel duty and replacement cable codes

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 4 October 2026, heading 8544 covers insulated electric conductors, including cable fitted with connectors. Ordinary extension reel cable assemblies normally fall under 8544 42 90 90. The other table rows concern unterminated replacement cable, rather than complete plug-and-socket reels.

The selected lines carry 2% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measure and no attached import controls in the supplied tariff facts. The connector-fitted line lists suspensions for a specified low-voltage cable and offshore wind cable manufacture under authorised use. These do not cover ordinary extension reels; the replacement-cable lines shown have no suspension.

Confirm the commodity code using the complete assembly drawing, connector details, cable voltage and individual conductor-wire diameter. Do not classify a finished reel as loose cable merely because it is wound on a drum. See the wider electrical cable and wire harness guide.

Specify the reel, cable and permitted load together

Specify cable length, copper conductor cross-section, strand construction, sheath material, socket layout, plug and fuse model, reel frame and winding mechanism. State indoor or outdoor use and request test evidence for any claimed water resistance. Agree separate wound and fully unwound load ratings, plus the thermal cut-out and reset behaviour where fitted.

For mains-voltage assemblies, confirm the applicable electrical safety rules, technical documentation, declaration of conformity and UKCA or CE marking requirements with the relevant authority. Confirm any separate domestic plug and socket rules, including whether recognised-body approval is needed for the exact UK plug model, rather than relying on a generic cable report. Request substance-compliance evidence for insulation and sheath materials and confirm the applicable hazardous-substance restrictions.

The importer must ensure instructions accompany the equipment in easily understandable English. Agree instructions explaining wound-load restrictions, unwinding and any cut-out reset procedure. Use testing and certification support to match the reports to the finished reel and its components.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative batch of extension cable reels, not a quotation under 8544 42 90 90, invoiced at £12,000 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £12,600. Duty at 2% is £252. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £12,852, so it is £2,570.40. Import taxes total £2,822.40; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £252 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Cable: measure usable length and conductor construction against the specification; check conductor material, sheath damage and cable anchorage.

Plug and sockets: match approval documents to the fitted models; check pin dimensions, fuse identity, socket shutters and terminal security.

Electrical performance: obtain continuity, earth continuity and insulation test records; arrange load and temperature-rise checks in wound and unwound conditions against the agreed ratings.

Reel and labels: operate the winding mechanism, inspect the frame and handle, and match ratings, model identity, conformity marking and English instructions to the approved sample. Plan checks before shipment and on arrival using the inspection guide.

What goes wrong

A reel can look correct while its conductor size, plug geometry or internal clearances differ from the approved sample. An official UK safety report identified insufficient creepage and clearance distances as a serious fire risk in a China-made socket extension with cabling in a reel. Check the finished assembly rather than accepting a report for an unrelated cable or plug.

A label that gives only the unwound load leaves the buyer without a clear wound-use specification. Other acceptance failures include a sticking drum, loose socket contacts, damaged cable exits and an unverified cut-out. Record these as explicit acceptance checks and require approval before the factory changes cable, plug, sockets or protective components.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on extension cable reels from China?

Ordinary connector-fitted reel assemblies normally use 8544 42 90 90 at 2%. All selected power-cable lines carry 2%, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measure in the supplied tariff facts.

Do extension cable reels need CE or UKCA marking?

For mains-voltage assemblies, confirm the applicable electrical safety rules and any UKCA or CE marking, declaration of conformity and technical documentation requirements with the relevant authority. Confirm separately whether domestic plug approval is required.

What should I ask a Chinese cable reel factory for?

Ask for the cable construction, exact plug and socket models, wound and unwound load ratings, finished-assembly test reports, conformity documents and English instructions.

How do I check an extension cable reel on arrival?

Check cable length and conductor construction, plug and socket identity, anchorage, winding operation and labels. Match electrical test records and the finished reel to the approved sample.
